PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College Friars men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted the Bryant University Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 19. The meet was the Friars home opener, held in Providence College's Taylor Natatorium. Despite multiple record setting performances from the Friars, the Bulldogs won decisively, outscoring the Friar women and men 204-95 and 164-132, respectively.
Freshman Jennie Bankes (Boxford Mass), Sophomore
Katie Thornton (Fairfield, Conn.), Sophomore
Margie Keenan (Summit, N.J.), and Sophomore
Lauren Zawacki (Marshfield, Mass.) set a new school record for the Friars in the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:50.25). The previous record of 1:50.60 was set in 1997 by Guerin Anglim, Stacy Sweeter, Carla Clemente, and Kierstin Newell.
Freshman
Rachel DiTolla (Miller Place, N.Y.) outpaced the competition in the 200-meter butterfly, clocking in at 2:27.19 for a first-place finish. In the 100-meter butterfly, Thornton emerges victorious with a 1:07.41.
Sophomore
Andrew Ferrell (Atlanta, Ga.) bests the school record in the 200-meter butterfly. Ferrell's 2:07.79 is a 1.51 second improvement on Steven Brown's 2:09.30 swam 21 years earlier.
Freshman
Justin Viotto (Morristown, N.J.) battled his way to first-place in the 800-meter freestyle with an 8:41.06. Viotto would later return to the pool for the 400-meter freestyle, earning another first-place finish (4:12.58). Sophomore
John Freeman (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Freshman
Ian McElrath (Menands, N.Y.) finish 1-2 in the 200-meter freestyle, stopping the clock at 1:57.62 and 1:59.62, respectively. Junior
Patrick Brannigan (Darien, Conn.) narrowly beat the Bulldogs' Andrew Allen, winning the 50-meter freestyle by just one tenth of a second (24.03).
Finishing the day for the men, the group of Freeman,
Mark McLaughlin (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.), Viotto, and Brannigan combined for a 1:39.06 in the final race of the day, the 200-meter freestyle relay. The time was good enough for first place.
The Friars ship up to Cambridge, Mass. on Friday, Oct. 26 to take on the Crimson of Harvard University. The meet is set to begin at 5:00 P.M.
