PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams turned in several quality performances at the Springtime Invitational at Brown University Sunday. Four Friars earned berths in next week's BIG EAST Championships with their times.
On the men's side, a pair of juniors took first place finishes. Junior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) carried the 1500-meters with a blazing time of 3:43.66 - nearly 12 seconds faster than the mark needed to qualify for the conference meet and about two seconds shy of his personal best. (McCarthy had already qualified for the BIG EAST's in the 5000-meters.) Also qualifying in the1500 was freshman Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand), who continued to impress in his debut outdoor season with a 3:51.74 posting.
Meanwhile, junior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) took advantage of his first track meet of the school-year by winning the 5000 going away in 14:43.50, nearly four seconds faster than the BIG EAST standard.
Also impressing on the men's side were senior Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who grabbed second in the 400 with a 49.44, and classmate Phil Connaughton (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and his long jump of 6.80 meters.
On the women's side, a highlight came courtesy Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.). The junior earned first place in the 5000-meters. She posted a BIG EAST worthy time of 17:34.29 that was 28 seconds faster than the second place competitor.
Two relay teams earned top three finishes. The 4x400 quartet of Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Laura Isabelle (Troy, N.Y.), Meg Van Name (Stamford, Conn.) and Julie Wolf (Holden, Mass.) clocked a second-place effort of 4:08.87. Meanwhile the 4x100 grouping of Julie Bell (Weymouth, Mass), Meredith Daly (Ashland, Mass.), Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.), and Maria Pantezelos (Danvers, Mass.) placed third, getting the baton around the track in 50.19.
Lavigne pulled double duty, earning fourth in the triple jump when she registered 10.91 meters.
The efforts on the east side concluded a full weekend of work for the Friars, who took part in the 17th Penn Relays Thursday thru Saturday in Philadelphia.
The teams will compete next at the BIG EAST Championships, held this Friday through Sunday at Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pa.
