TAMPA, Fla. - The Providence College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 double overtime draw against No. 13/16 USF Saturday night in a BIG EAST Conference match played at the Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla. With the tie, Providence moves to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the BIG EAST, while USF is now 5-2-2 and 1-0-1 in league action. Dating back to last season, the Friars are 5-0-2 in their last seven BIG EAST games.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when sophomore Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) connected on his second goal of the season. Junior Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) and freshman Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I.) assisted on the goal as the Friars held a 1-0 first half advantage. However, in the 58th minute, the Bulls were awarded a penalty kick which Paul Leston converted to tie the match.
The Friars' best chance in the first overtime came with one minute remaining when Ugarte fired a left-footed shot from the right side of the 18-yard box, but Chris Blais made the save at the near post. Blais finished with four saves, while senior Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) stopped three shots for the Friars who finished with a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, October 4 when they travel to Boston, Mass. for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match against Boston University.
