KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College women's track and field team kicked off the second semester portion of its schedule Saturday, turning in several strong performances at the URI Invitational.
Sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, New York) and junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, New York) led the way by placing first and second respectively in the 3000-meters. Greany cruised to the victory in her first competition of the season with a time of 9:36.74. Champagne crossed in 9:55.46, the only other runner to break the 10-minute barrier.
The Friars also scored a victory in the distance medley relay, with the quartet of Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland), Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.), Julie Wolf (Holden, Mass.) and Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) clocking in at 12:12.58. Providence was over a minute faster than second place Quinnipiac (13:16.99).
Other highlights included the mile, with Davidson checking in second overall (and the first collegiate runner) with a 4:55.36, while Ffrench O'Carroll's 4:57.60 was good for fourth. Friar Molly Shapiro was third in the 400-meters (1:01.85). Teammate Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) grabbed fifth in the 500-meters (1:19.46), and freshman Laura Isabelle (Troy, N.Y.) earned fifth in the 800-meters (2:26.73.)
The Friars compete again next Friday, January 28 at the Boston University Terrier Classic.
