Friars Compete at 116th Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Providence College sent 12 athletes to compete at the 116th running of the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. this weekend. The men's 4xmile relay team had the top performance of the weekend, placing eighth overall.
The men's 4xmile squad of graduate student Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland), sophomores Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) and Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) and senior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) finished in 16:24.24. The Friars placed second of the four BIG EAST schools entered in the race. Oregon took first with a time of 16:15.14.
The men's 4x400 team placed fifth in their heat and 50th out of 81 teams. Junior Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.), graduate student Alan Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.), junior Thomas Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.) and graduate student Kyle Mushaweh (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished in 3:20.68.
In the women's 4x1500m relay, the Friars ran a combined time of 18:22.42 to place 10th overall. Freshman Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) ran the opener in 4:32.25 before handing off to sophomore Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) who ran a split of 4:28.8. Junior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) ran the third leg in 4:35.7 and freshman Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) anchored the team with a time of 4:45.4. Tennessee ran the fourth-fastest time ever at the Penn Relays to take first in 17:14.91.
Up next for Providence is the 2010 BIG EAST Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2.
