Distance Runners Perform Well at BIG EAST Championships

The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to New York, N.Y. this weekend and competed at the 2010 BIG EAST Track and Field Indoor Championships. In the women's 3,000m, freshman Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and graduate student Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 9:28.3 and 9:35.27. Sophomore Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) placed ninth in the mile in a time of 4:13.32.
In the men's 5,000m, senior Tom Webb (Williston, Vt.) ran a time of 14:19.16 to place ninth. The men's distance medley placed fifth overall as sophomores Julian Matthews and Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) combined with graduate students Alan Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland) to run a time of 9:54.25.
The women's team was highlighted by the performance in the 3,000m with Greany and DiCamillo placing fifth and sixth and seniors Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) and Kyrstal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) placing ninth and 14th, respectively. Twohig finished in 9:40.92 and Douglas crossed the finish line at 9:49.78. DiCamillo and Twohig also peformed well in the 5,000 as they placed ninth and 11th, respectively. DiCamillo ran a time of 16:48.09 while Twohig finished in 16:54.39. The women's distance medley placed seventh of 13 teams as Greany and fellow freshman Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) combined with juniors Julie Wolf (Holden, Mass.) and Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) to finish in a time of 11:50.41.
The Villanova women won the overall team competition finishing with 115 points, followed by Lousiville (107), Connecticut (84), West Virginia (76.5) and Georgetown (67).
In the men's team competition, Notre Dame took first with 146.5 points. Georgetown scored 104 points to place second and the top-five was rounded out by Louisville (93), Villanova (76.5) and Connecticut (75.5)
Both teams will travel Boston, Mass. to compete at the New England Championships on the campus of Boston University on Friday and Saturday, February 26-27.
