Women's Indoor Track Competes at Challenge Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's indoor track team competed at the Women's Challenge Cup at Brown University on Saturday, January 17. The Friars were led by junior Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) who captured the 3,000 meters in record time.
Smith's time of 9:04.90 in the 3,000 meters is the fastest time run in the world this season. She finished more than 1:15 ahead of her closest competitor. In addition, Smith, who placed second overall at the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championship, automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship.
Junior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) also had an impressive afternoon, finishing first in the mile in a time of 4:48.81 to qualify provisionally for the NCAA's. Senior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) placed second in the mile in a time of 5:00.38.
Junior Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) also was a first-place finisher as she recorded a time of 2:58 in the 1,000 meters. Crombie qualified for the BIG EAST Championship and the ECAC Championship.
Providence returns to action on January 30-31 at the Terrier Invitational.
