PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated the University of New Hampshire, 4-1, in non-conference action on Friday, September 26 at Hendricken Field in Providence, R.I. Freshman forward Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) led the Friars with two goals and one assist. Her five points on the afternoon mark a single-game career high. McGow now has a total of 15 points on six goals and three assists this season.

The Wildcats got on the board first, scoring their only goal of the afternoon at the 13:25 mark of the first half. Katie White was credited with the goal, unassisted, during a scramble in front of the cage. Providence rallied to tie the game, 1-1, with 5:59 remaining in the first half as sophomore Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.) deflected an initial shot from McGow. McGow earned credit for the assist. The two teams remained knotted, 1-1, at halftime.

The Friars shutout New Hampshire in the second half and went on to score three goals of their own en-route to the 4-1 victory. McGow started the scoring spree at the 29:07 mark of the half as she deflected senior Stefanie Suehnholz's (Flemington, N.J.) initial shot on a penalty corner attempt. The duo teamed up once more with 19:06 remaining in the game on the exact same play. Suehnholz took a hard shot on goal from the top of the circle and McGow deflected it into the left side of the cage. Suehnholz finished the day with two assists. Junior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) added an unassisted goal for the Friars with 16:19 left on the clock to give the Friars the decisive win. A year ago, New Hampshire defeated Providence, 1-0, in overtime in Durham, N.H.

In goal for Providence, senior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) recorded eight saves and allowed just one UNH goal in 70 minutes of action. Christine Buckley stopped nine shots for UNH and allowed all four Friar goals in the loss.

Providence (6-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) will host Maine in non-conference action on Sunday, September 28. The game will be played at Hendricken Field on the campus of Providence College at Noon in Providence, R.I. Friar second-year head coach Diane Madl spent nine seasons with the Black Bears as an assistant field hockey coach prior to arrival at PC.
