Sixth-Seeded Providence Softball Upsets No. 3-Seed Villanova In Historic Seven-Run Comeback Win

The Friars recorded their first tournament win in thirty years.


VILLANOVA, Pa. – The No. 6-seed Providence College softball team upset No. 3-seed Villanova, 10-9, in an eight inning, seven-run comeback win in the First Round of the BIG EAST Softball Championship on Wednesday, May 7 at the Villanova Softball Complex in Villanova, Pa. The Friars recorded eight of their 10 runs in the final three innings to secure their first postseason win since 1995. With the victory, the Friars improved to a 23-29 overall record. Sophomore Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) paced the Friars with two home runs and three RBI. Senior Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) was credited with the win for Providence, pitching 4.1 innings while recording seven strikeouts.  

GAME RECAP 

· The Wildcats struck first with a solo home run by Maranda Runco in the bottom of the first (1-0).  

· Villanova added two more runs in the second inning to extend its lead to 3-0. 

· Dunn got the Friars on the board in the top of the third with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 3-2.  

· The Wildcats scored four runs in the third and two in the fifth to extend the lead to 9-2.  

· The Friars caught momentum in the top of the sixth, registering four hits and scoring three runs as Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.), Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) and Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) each recorded an RBI (9-5).  

· Dunn added a solo shot in the top of the seventh to bring the lead within three, 9-6. After base hits from Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) and Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.), Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) recorded an RBI single to bring the score to 9-7.  

· With two outs in the seventh, Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) recorded a reached on an error as two runs scored to tie the score at 9-9.  

· Walter was able to strand two players and strikeout one in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game into extra innings.  

· The Friars took their first lead of the game in the eighth after Smith scored her first run of the day off a sacrifice fly by Peterson (10-9).  

· Walter struck out two additional batters in a three-up, three-down eighth inning to secure a 10-9, win. It marked the first BIG EAST Tournament win since 1995 when the Friars defeated Boston College in the semifinal round.

· Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.), Alannah Hopkins (Sylva, N.C.) and Walter all spent time in the circle for PC. Walter, the winning pitcher, finished the last four innings with seven strikeouts while conceding only two earned runs and four hits.

ON DECK 

Providence will play the No. 2 seeded UConn Huskies in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, May 8 at 3:00 p.m. on BEDN. The winner will advance to the semifinal round on Friday, May 9 at 12 p.m.
