PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team was defeated by Butler University (16-7, 5-1 BIG EAST), 9-6, on Sunay, March 16 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars moved to 6-16 including a 3-3 mark in BIG EAST play.  Junior Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) drilled in a game-high three RBI, finishing 2-4 from the plate.  

GAME NOTES  

  • The Bulldogs opened the scoring with three runs in the first on two home runs (3-0).  

  • Smith cut the deficit to one (3-2) in the second with a two-run double that scored Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) and Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.). 

  • Eichten drilled in an RBI double in the third to tie the score at three. Later in the inning, Petrarca was hit by a pitch on a bases-loaded play that scored Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.). Friars led, 4-3. 

  • The Bulldogs took a 6-4 lead in the fourth inning.  

  • The Friars tied the score at 6-6 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Petrarca and an RBI double from Smith.  

  • Butler retook the lead with three runs in the sixth, 9-6. 

  • Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) pitched six innings for the Friars. The sophomore recorded five strikeouts while conceding 10 hits across and four earned runs across 29 at-bats.  

ON DECK 

The Friars will play in a mid-week doubleheader against Dartmouth on Tuesday, March 18. The games will be held at the Brown Softball Field in Providence, R.I. with the first game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
