PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College men's soccer Head Coach
Craig Stewart announced today (June 30) the team's incoming players for the 2022 season. The group consists of one graduate transfer and eight freshmen.
Tomas Magnusson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland),
Mario Vazquez Pina (A Coruna, Spain),
Mitchel Varley (Portsmouth, New Hampshire),
Jaden Perryman (Ports-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago), Samuel Montalto (Stonington, Conn.),
Brian Lopez (Hialeah, Fla.),
Landon Cartwright (Old Greenwich, Conn.),
Owen VanMarter (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) make up the incoming freshman. Nicholas Benjamin (Stonington, Conn.) will join the Friars for his final season after spending the last four years at the University of Hartford.
Newcomers -
Magnusson joins the Friars after graduating from Framhaldsskólinn í Vestmannaeyjum. The 6-2, 170-pound midfielder played for IBV and was a team captain during his junior and academy years. He was selected as the most outstanding player at the conclusion of the 2020 season.
Vazquez Pina graduated from IES Rafael Dieste and played for R.C. Deportivo de La Coruna. Standing at 6-4 and weighing 187 pounds, he helped his team get to the U-18 Galician League Championship in 2021.
Varley attended Berwick Academy and played for Seacoast United MLS Next. Standing at 5-10, 155 pounds, Varley scored 44 goals and tallied 23 assists while at Berwick. He was named to the EIL All-League First Team in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 and was awarded the Varsity MVP award in 2020.
Perryman joins the Friars after attending Fatima College and High Mowing School. He also played for Queens Park, Black Rock FC and the Trinidad and Tobago U-20 Team. The 5-11, 175-pound defender was on the All-American Watch-List.
Montalto graduated from Stonington High School and played for Southeast Soccer Club. The 6-3, 175-pound forward scored 105 career goals and helped lead his team to State Championships in 2019 and 2021. He was named an All-American his senior season.
Lopez attended Mater Lakes Academy and played for Orlando City B. Standing at 5-6 and weighing 130 pounds, the midfielder recorded over 50 career goals and 80 career assists. In 2015, he represented the USA in Danone Cup World Finals in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Cartwright, a 6-0, 175-pound midfielder/defender graduated from Greenwich High School. Cartwright played for Beachside Soccer Club and Orlando City and was a two-year captain for Beachside. He competed in MLS Next playoff with Beachside Soccer Club and in the GA Cup with Orlando City.
VanMarter attended Florida Virtual and played for Tormenta FC and Orlando City. The 5-11, 135-pound defender was a team captain of Tormenta FC for four years and helped lead his team to the MLS Next U-17 National Championship.
Benjamin joins the Friars after spending four years at the University of Hartford and served as team captain as a senior. In 2020, he was selected to the America East All-Conference First Team, All-Championship Team, All-Academic Team and Commissioners Honor Roll. Previously, Benjamin attended Stonington High School and played for Oakwood Soccer Club. He led his club team to a NPL Regional Championship in 2015.
Any additional signees will be announced at a later date.
The Friars enjoyed a successful 2021 season finishing with a No. 16 ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll after being ranked in the top-25 of the poll for eight straight weeks before the Nov. 9 release.
The Friars qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 11
th time in program history. They defeated Marist (2-0) and No. 14-seed and defending NCAA National Champion Marshall, 2-1, in double overtime, before falling to No.7 Georgetown in the NCAA Third Round.
