PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team was swept in a series-opening doubleheader against UConn on Tuesday, April 27 at Glay Field. The Friars dropped game one, 6-4, and game two, 8-5.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
-Providence jumped out to an early lead after
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) singled and
Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) walked to bring in twos run in the bottom of the first, 2-0, by Jaque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) and
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.), respectively.

Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) homered to center field in the bottom of the third, improving the Friars lead 3-0.
-
Jacque Harrington added a home run in the bottom of the fourth, 4-0.
-The Friars let up three runs in the top of the fifth with a home run by UConn's Sami Barnett, cutting into the Friars' lead, 4-3.
-The Huskies added two more runs, 5-4, in the top of the sixth. Hollis Wivell scored off of a passed ball and Lauren Benson capitalized off of a single to third base by Aziah James.
-Barnett scored off of a double down the right field line by Devon Casazza in the seventh, claiming a 6-4 victory.

Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs and eight hits, while
Tori Grifone and
Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) contributed one inning each. Grifone gave up two hits and three earned runs before Murphy took over allowing just one hit and zero earned runs.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
-The first inning featured two home runs by Tomaso and Traver, both with an RBI of two, 4-0.
-UConn made a comeback in the top of the third, surpassing the Friars 6-4. Two runs were scored off of a Friar's error.
-Tomaso added one more run for the Friars, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth with a home run with Tomaso. This served as Tomaso's third home run of the day and fourth of the season, a team high.
-The Huskies increased their lead by two more in the top of the fifth, 8-5. Barnett scored off a Friar's error and Briana Marcelino scored off a ground out by Devon Casazza.

Sarah Gunderson (Upper Saddle River. N.J.) started in the circle for the Friars, allowing six hits and four earned runs in 2.1 innings while striking out five.

Julia Murphy followed up, pitching 3.2 innings for Providence, surrendering five hits and zero earned runs with one strike out.

Olivia Sprofera (Mahwah, N.J.) pitched the final inning for Providence, allowing one hit.
