Softball Set To Host Mid-Week Series Against UConn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will host the UConn Huskies on Tuesday, April 26 with a double header beginning at 3:00 p.m. before the series finale on Wednesday, April 28 at 1:00 p.m.
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Providence College softball team has a 3-12-1 record on the season. The team has a 3-6-1 BIG EAST record.

Freshman Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) leads the team in in batting percentage (.278), hits (10) and RBI (5) through the team's first 16 games. This past weekend, Grifone went 4-for-7 at the plate in a three-game series against Butler. She posted a .571 batting average with a double, home run and four RBI. The rookie also pitched two innings on Saturday, striking out four and not allowing an extra-base hit. Grifone was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, as announced by on Monday, April 26.

Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) and Madi Traver (Irving, Texas) have played key roles in the Friar offense. Tomaso is currently batting .214 with nine hits. Traver also has nine hits with and is batting .200. Tomaso and Traver each have one home run and four RBI.

Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Sarah Gunderson (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) have split starting duties on the mound for Providence. Alvarez has a record of 2-5 on the season with an ERA of 2.72 and 31 strikeouts. Gunderson has a 3.16 ERA with a team high 34 strikeouts in 31.0 innings pitched. Both Alvarez and Gunderson were recognized for their weekend performance against Butler and were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

SCOUTING UCONN:
The UConn Huskies have a record of 13-13 on the season. In BIG EAST play, the Huskies are 5-4.

Reese Guevarra has been a strong performer for the Huskies. She is batting .362 with 34 hits and 12 RBI. Guevarra is followed closely by Jana Sanden and Hollis Wivell who have batting averages of .356 and .328, respectively. Sanden has 26 hits with five home runs and an RBI of 19. Wivell has 19 hits through 58 at bats.

Freshman Peyton Kinney and sophomore Meghan O'Neil serve as the UConn pitching staff. Kinney has a 8-10 record with a 2.65 ERA and 99 batters struck out on the season. O'Neil holds a 3.58 ERA through the season with a 5-3 record and 28 strike outs.

ON DECK:
Providence will play their last conference series against Seton Hall beginning on Saturday, May 8 at Glay Field.
