Softball Downed In Doubleheader Against St. Johns

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence Softball team played a doubleheader against the St. Johns Red Storm on Saturday, March 27. The Friars dropped the first game, 4-0, before losing the second game, 4-1. Providence now has a record of 2-7 on the season and is 1-4 in BIG EAST play.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
-In game one, the Red Storm blanked the Friars, 4-0. St. John's starter Erin Brown pitched a complete-game shutout and allowed just two hits, by Jacque Harrington and Lyndsey Evix.
-St. John's Natalie Alheidt came in to score on the RBI with a double, grabbing a two-point lead, 2-0, at the bottom of the third.
-Gabby Conca hit a home run and Gretchen Bowie got an RBI double, both in the bottom of the fourth, to secure a 4-0 win.
-Tori Grifone pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs and five hits, while Julia Murphy came on in the final two innings, giving up zero hits and earned runs, with one strike out.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Red Storm amassed eight hits in game two, racing out to 4-0 lead through five innings.
-St. Johns jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI by Gretchen Bowie.
- The Red Storm tacked on an insurance run at the end of the first inning on squeeze play to make it 2-0.
-St. John's added two more, 4-0, with a RBI single from Kaitlin Mattera at the end of the fifth.
- The only scoring of the day for the Friars happened in the top of the sixth with Molly McGarry on a home run. McGarry's run broke up Kmett's five-inning bid at a no-hitter.
-Daniela Alvarez started in the circle for the Friars, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in 4 innings while striking out two.
-Sarah Gunderson pitched the final 1 innings for Providence, surrendering one hits with zero runs allowed.

Providence will play the Red Storm again tomorrow, March 28 at 11:00 a.m., to complete their three-game series next weekend.
