Friars host the Red Storm on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
FRIARS HOST ST. JOHN'S FOR ANNUAL PINK OUT FRIARTOWN EVENT... Providence College will host St. John's in BIG EAST action on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m. The game will serve as the program's annual Pink Out Friartown event, which supports the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
PROVIDENCE VS. ST. JOHN'S ALL-TIME... The Friars and Red Storm have met 71 times during the history of the two women's basketball programs. St. John's leads the all-time series, 42-29, including victories in each of the last two meetings.
DOWN TO THE WIRE... Each of the last five games have been decided by six points or less and a combined total of 17 points overall. The largest margin between the two teams during the four-game span was a six-point victory by St. John's on Jan. 17, 2020 in Queens.
LAST MEETING AT ALUMNI HALL... The last meeting between Providence and St. John's at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. dates back to Feb. 10, 2019. The Red Storm escaped with a 60-57 victory. Mary Baskerville recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards and Chanell Williams chipped in 12 points. St. John's was paced by Alisha Kebbe's 15 points, while Tiana England added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
FRIARS RECENT SUCCESS AGAINST ST. JOHN'S... Prior to its last two losses against St. John's, the Friars had reeled off three-straight victories over the Red Storm. Providence last defeated St. John's on Jan. 11, 2019 at Carnesecca Arena by a score of 67-66 in overtime. Providence hit one of two free throws with 0.7 seconds left on the clock in OT to claim the win.
NEW YORK STATE OF MIND... Over a quarter of the Friars' 14-player roster hails from New York City. Junior guard Chanell Williams is from the Bronx and attended Monsignor Scanlan. Sophomore Earlette Scott, who scored the game-winning bucket in the Friars' overtime victory at Carnesecca Arena last season, is from Brooklyn and attended South Shore. Two rookies round out of the list of NYC natives in Hevynne Bristow and Fatima Lee. Bristow is from Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn Community of Arts and Media, while Lee is a Queens native who attended South Shore for two seasons before completing her high school career at Putnam Science Academy. In addition to the four players, Associate Head Coach Priscilla Edwards grew up in Harlem and attended Frederick Douglass Academy.
ROAD WARRIORS... The Friars have played 17 of their 25 games on the road. The Friars are 5-9 in true road games and 2-1 on a neutral court to post a combined 7-10 mark away from home. The Friars have suffered losses in each of their last seven road games.Â
THREE OR MORE DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORERS... Providence owns a 7-4 record this season when three or more Friars reach double-digits in the scoring column. Three of the four losses have come during a recent stretch of games against Marquette, DePaul and Creighton. The Friars had three double-digit scorers against the Golden Eagles and four players in double figures against DePaul and Creighton.
10-POINTS OR LESS... Seven of the Friars' 12 losses in BIG EAST Conference play have been decided by 10 points or less, including six losses within single digits.
PROVIDENCE HALTS EIGHT-GAME SKID WITH WIN OVER XAVIER... Providence College snapped an eight-game winless streak with a 60-48 victory over Xavier on Jan. 26. During the eight-game skid, six of the Friars' eight losses were decided by 10 points or less. Â
FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 5-4 in overtime games under the direction of Head Coach Jim Crowley, including a 3-0 mark last season (2018-19). The Friars are 3-3 vs. BIG EAST opponents in overtime. The Friars have yet to play an overtime game during the 2019-20 campaign.
DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDS... Mary Baskerville (12) and Alyssa Geary (10) each recorded double-digit rebounds on Jan. 24 vs. Butler. The last time two Friars recorded double-digit rebounds in the same game dates back to the 2014-15 season. On Jan. 11, 2015, Alexis Harris (11) and Chanise Baldwin (12) achieved the feat against Seton Hall.
MARY BASKERVILLE RECORDS 10th CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE... Mary Baskerville notched her fourth double-double of the season and the 10th of her career on Jan. 17 against St. John's. She netted 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Red Storm. It also marked the second double-double for Baskerville during BIG EAST play in 2019-20, and six of her 10 career double-doubles have been recorded during regular-season conference play overall.
EARLETTE SCOTT STEPPING UP ON OFFENSE... Sophomore guard Earlette Scott has reached double figures in 11 games this season, including seven double-digit games during BIG EAST Conference play. Over the course of the Friars' last six games, she has hit double digits five times and has averaged 11.6 points per game in that span.Â
ALL SOPHOMORE LINE-UP... Providence has featured an all sophomore starting line-up in each of its last four games. Mary Baskerville (22 starts) and Kaela Webb (25 starts) have started every game they have played this season, and have recently been joined by Earlette Scott (9 starts), Alyssa Geary (11 starts) and Sophia Widmeyer (4 starts). In 25 games overall this season, 10 different players have seen time in the starting line-up.
LOOKING FOR CHANELL WILLIAMS TO MAINTAIN SPARK... Junior guard Chanell Williams missed the Friars' most recent game with an illness. Prior to the Creighton game, Williams posted back-to-back double-digit scoring games against Marquette (10 points) and DePaul (15 point). Her 15 points against the Blue Demons marked a season high. She previously netted a season-best 12 points against UMass Lowell (Nov. 24).
BLOCK PARTY... Mary Baskerville stands atop of the BIG EAST with 1.9 blocked shots per game. In 22 games played, Baskerville has recorded 41 blocked shots, which ranks second all-time in program history for a sophomore. Mary Ann McCoy leads the way with 68 blocks as a sophomore. Andrea Mangum (41) ranks third and and Emily Cournoyer (39) ranks fourth. Last season, Baskerville recorded a program record for a freshman with 53 blocked shots.
MARY BASKERVILLE AMONG NCAA CAREER LEADERS IN FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE... Mary Baskerville entered the weekend ranked 21st in the nation among NCAA Division I active career leaders in field goal percentage. In 56 career games, Baskerville has hit 245-432 shot attempts (.567). This season, she is shooting 54.1-percent (106-196), which ranks second in the BIG EAST. As a rookie in 2018-19, she recorded the second-highest field-goal percentage in program history for a single-season, and set the program's all-time record for field-goal percentage by a freshman (.580, 141-243).
KAELA WEBB LEADS THE CHARGE FROM BEYOND THE ARC... Kaela Webb leads the Friars from beyond the arc this season, shooting .405 from deep (60-148). She entered the weekend ranked third in the BIG EAST and 36th in the nation. Webb also entered the weekend ranked third in the BIG EAST with 2.5 made three-pointers per game.Â
AT THE HALF... Providence has led or has been tied with its opponent at the half in 13 of its 25 games, including four of 12 BIG EAST Conference games. The Friars have posted a 7-6 record in those games.
REBOUNDING BY COMMITTEE... Through 25 games, nine different players have led the team in rebounding. Mary Baskerville has led the Friars on the boards 14 times.Â
STAYING ON THE COURT... Mary Baskerville has played 22 of the Friars' 25 games this season and is averaging 21.0 minutes per game. She has played 20+ minutes in just 11 games overall. Despite limited minutes, she's been putting up impressive numbers. She is shooting 54-percent from the floor (106-196) and has hit double figures in the scoring column 14 times, including two 20-point games. She also leads Providence with four double-doubles and seven double-digit rebounding games. The unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection leads the team in scoring (12.6 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg) and blocked shots (1.9 bpg).
DOMINANT THIRD QUARTER PROPELS FRIARS... The Friars entered halftime facing a seven-point deficit against Xavier on Jan. 26. (22-15). Xavier bumped its lead to eight early in the third, but Providence used a 21-3 run to turn the tables and gain a 38-28 lead. The Musketeers closed within five on three occasions during the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, but Providence out-scored Xavier 17-10 to close the game and take the win, including a 8-8 performance from the free throw line in the final 1:47 of play. Earlette Scott netted a career-high 20 points, including 17 point in the second half of play. Alyssa Geary added 14 points and eight rebounds and Kaela Webb contributed 10 points. Webb and Scott teamed up to score 17 of the Friars' final 22 points in the game.
KAELA WEBB COMES UP BIG IN THE FOURTH QUARTER AGAINST XAVIER... Sophomore Kaela Webb scored 10 of her 12 points against Xavier in the fourth quarter on Jan. 26. She played all 10 minutes in the frame, shooting 3-3 from the field (2-2, 3FGM-3FGA) and 2-2 from the charity stripe. She also added one assist and one steal in the quarter and did not commit a turnover.
FRIARS FINISH NON-CONFERENCE PLAY AT 9-3... Providence College concluded its non-conference schedule with a 9-3 record. Jim Crowley has led the Friars to at least eight wins in regular-season non-conference play during three of his four years at the helm. Last year, Providence finished the non-conference slate 8-4 and in 2016-17 the Friars also posted an 8-4 mark. Crowley's lowest win total in the non-conference action with Providence came during the 2017-18 season (7-6).Â
FRIARS IMPROVE TO 14-5 UNDER JIM CROWLEY AT IN-SEASON TOURNAMENTS... Providence improved to 14-5 under Jim Crowley when competing at in-season tournaments, with a 3-2 record during the 2019-20 campaign. Providence won the 4th Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament, defeating Bryant (76-32) and Rhode Island (58-51). The Friars posted a 1-2 mark at the Lobo Invitational to close non-conference play (Dec. 18-20). Providence suffered losses to host New Mexico (86-68), Ball State (52-51) and defeated Loyola Marymount (48-45).
FRIARS WIN 2019 OCEAN STATE TIP-OFF TITLE... The Friars defeated in-state rivals Bryant (76-32) and Rhode Island (58-51) in the 4th Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament held in Smithfield, R.I. on Dec. 7-8. It marked the Friars' first championship in the tournament's existence. Mary Baskerville was named Most Outstanding Player, while Earlette Scott claimed All-Tournament Team honors.
FRIARS POST LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY SINCE 1991... The Friars defeated Bryant, 76-32, in the opening round of the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 7 in Smithfield, R.I. Providence's 44-point margin of victory is the largest since defeating Syracuse by 46 (106-60) on Feb. 20, 1991.
EARLETTE SCOTT NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Sophomore Earlette Scott was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Jan. 27. It marked the first league honor of her career. She averaged a team-best 16.5 points per game and added 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist against Butler and Xavier the previous weekend. She shot 9-17 from the field (.529), including 3-7 from beyond the arc (.429). Additionally, she hit 12-16 attempts from the foul line. In the Friars' victory over Xavier, Scott scored a career-high 20 points, including 17 points in the second half to help Providence overcome an eight-point deficit in the third quarter. She shot 4-10 from the field against the Musketeers and hit 11-13 free throws overall, including a perfect 6-6 from the stripe in the final 1:47 of play. Scott also matched her career high on the glass with eight rebounds. In the team's loss to Butler on Friday night, Scott scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and added four rebounds.Â
MARY BASKERVILLE NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Mary Baskerville was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 9. She guided the Friars to a 2-1 record last week, and also was named Most Outstanding Player at the 4th Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 8. In three games, Baskerville averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game, and shot 63.3-percent from the field (19-30). In the Friars' lone loss, she tallied 19 points and nine rebounds against Yale. That game originally began on Nov. 5, before it was suspended at halftime. The Friars and Bulldogs completed the second half of play on Dec. 3 in New Haven, Conn. At the Ocean State Tip-Off in Smithfield, R.I., Baskerville tallied 14 points and four rebounds in 15 minutes of action against Bryant. She followed with 15 points and five rebounds in the championship game against Rhode Island. Baskerville scored 11 of her 15 points in a decisive fourth quarter effort, while shooting 4-4 from the field, to give Providence a 58-51 victory.
KAELA WEBB NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL IN BACK-TO-BACK WEEKS... Sophomore Kaela Webb was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in back-to-back weeks to start the season (Nov. 11 and Nov. 18). It marks her first appearances on the league's weekly honor roll, having previously been recognized among the weekly award winners as BIG EAST Freshman of the Week last season (Jan. 21).Â
TOP SHOOTING PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON CLOUDED BY LOSS... The Friars shot a season-best 58.5-percent from the field (31-53) and tied their season-best shooting performance from beyond the arc (.500, 8-16) in their loss to Yale. Despite Providence's impressive shooting, Yale held a +14 scoring advantage at the foul line. The Bulldogs converted 23-32 attempts at the charity stripe, compared to the Friars' 9-15 shooting at the line.
CROWLEY PICKS UP 300th NCAA DIVISION I HEAD COACHING VICTORY... Providence College Head Coach Jim Crowley picked up his 300th NCAA Division I victory on Nov. 9 as the Friars defeated UMass, 72-63. Crowley compiled 258 NCAA Division I wins in 16 seasons at St. Bonaventure (2000-16) and currently owns 51 wins at Providence in his fourth season with the program.Â
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH TIED FOR FIFTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES' POLL... Providence College was picked to finish in a tie for fifth place in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Oct. 10 at Madison Square Garden as part of the league's annual media day event.Â
MARY BASKERVILLE NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM AS ONE OF FOUR UNANIMOUS SELECTIONS... Sophomore Mary Baskerville was a unanimous selection to the 2019-20 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, announced at the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 10. She earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year accolades at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season, in addition to a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. She is just the second player in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year recognition, and first since Friar great Tracy Lis '92 was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 1989. Baskerville also was a five-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, marking the most freshman of the week honors in program history. As a rookie, Baskerville averaged 9.5 points per game and led the Friars in rebounding (7.3 rpg), blocked shots (1.5 bpg), double-doubles (six) and field-goal percentage (.580, 141-243). She established program records for blocked shots (53) and field-goal percentage (.580) for a freshman. Additionally, her .580 field-goal percentage was the second-highest for a single-season in program history overall, trailing Elizabeth Lawlor's shooting clip of .581 (193-332) during the 1988-89 season.
MOST WINS IN BIG EAST PLAY SINCE 1996-97... The Friars completed the 2018-19 regular-season schedule with an 8-10 mark in the BIG EAST Conference and finished in tie for sixth place in the league standings. The Friars' eight wins were the most in conference play since 1996-97, when Providence also finished with an 8-10 mark. It marked just the fourth time in the last 20 years that the Friars have recorded six or more victories in league play.Â
