PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sabou Gueye netted a career-high 29 points and added a team-best nine rebounds and five steals to guide Providence College to a 66-50 victory over Xavier on Feb. 8 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 11-14 overall (4-10 BIG EAST), while Xavier dropped to 11-13 overall (4-11 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars got out to a 7-2 lead through the first 5:05 of the game.
• Xavier used an 8-0 run to take an 11-9 lead with 1:26 on the clock.
• Audrey Shields and Payton Dunbar drilled back-to-back triples, followed by a steal and score by Gueye as time expired to give Providence a 17-11 lead at the intermission.
2ND QUARTER:
• Gueye scored back-to-back buckets to start the second and extended the Friars' run to 12-0. The offensive outburst provided a double-digit lead (21-11) with 8:04 on the clock.
• Xavier halted the run with a three-point bucket after a timeout (21-14).
• The Friars' defense held the Musketeers without a made field goal for without a field goal for more than six minutes while mounting a 27-16 lead.
• Xavier closed within seven at halftime (29-22).
• Gueye led all scorers with 12 first-half points on 6-9 shooting.
• Nalani Kaysia helped Providence claim a 22-15 rebounding advantage in the first half with six boards.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence started the third quarter on 6-0 run to a 35-22 lead.
• Xavier responded with an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to 35-33 with 5:19 on the clock.
• The Friars answered with seven-straight points on back-to-back buckets from Gueye and a three-pointer from Ashley Dinges to push back out to a 42-33 lead (2:01).
• Providence took a 48-38 lead into the intermission.
• The Friars outscored the Musketeers 19-16 in the frame.
• Providence capped the scoring as Gueye got a steal with five-seconds left on the clock and fed Orlagh Gormley for a fast-break lay-up.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence used a 12-1 run that started with seven-straight points from Gueye and was eventually capped by a three-point bucket from Sophi Hall with 1:37 to play.
• The outburst gave the Friars their largest lead of the game (66-48).
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye finished with a career-high 29 points on 13-23 shooting and added nine rebounds, five steals, two assists and one blocked shot.
• Gueye's 29 points are the most by a Friar in a single game since Grace Efosa scored 29 against Villanova on Jan. 24, 2024 during an 82-76 overtime victory.
• Gueye is the first BIG EAST player to record at least 29 points, nine rebounds and five steals in a regular-season league game since Lucy Olsen achieved the feat for Villanova on Dec. 30, 2023. Olsen put up 31 points, nine rebounds and five steals – also against Xavier.
• Gormley finished with 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and a game-high four assists.
• Gormley now has 99 assists on the season. She is one shy of the 100-assist milestone. In the last 25 years, only five Friars have recorded 100 assists in a single season and combined to do it seven times. Janai Crooms is the only player to achieve the feat in the last 10 years.
• Providence dominated the glass with a 42-28 rebounding advantage. The Friars improved to 7-3 on the year when they out-rebound their opponent.
• Providence eclipsed 40 rebounds in a game for the first time since Dec. 21 (46 vs. Georgetown).
• Providence improved to 7-1 on the season when scoring 65+ points.
• The Friars and Musketeers split the season series in 2025-26, with each team winning on its home court.
• Providence avenged a 61-47 loss to Xavier to open the BIG EAST schedule on Dec. 4 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
