Balanced Effort Lifts Friars To 73-64 Victory Over Butler

Sabou Gueye paced four Friars in double figures with 19 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team used a balanced effort to defeat Butler, 73-64, on Feb. 11 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars have won back-to-back games for the first time during the BIG EAST schedule and improved to 12-14 on the season (5-10 BIG EAST). Butler dropped to 9-16 overall (3-12 BIG EAST). Sabou Gueye paced four Friars in double figures with a game-high 19 points.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes of play heading into the media timeout, giving the Friars a 9-8 advantage (4:56).
• Butler claimed the largest lead of the quarter for either team (17-13) and led 20-18 at the intermission.
• Both teams shot well in the first quarter. Providence converted 62-percent (8-13), while Butler checked in at 57-percent (8-14). 
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence used a 7-0 spurt to claim a 29-23 lead with 6:38 left on the clock.
• The Friars outscored the Bulldogs 17-8 in the quarter overall and took a 35-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Gueye paced the Friars with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists in the first half. She shot 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from the foul line.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence held a 41-32 lead at the media timeout (4:26).
• Gueye (six) and Nalani Kaysia (four) combined to score 10 of the Friars' 14 points in the third.
• The Friars led 49-41 after three quarters. 
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence pushed out to a 14-point lead with 2:54 remaining (67-53).
• Butler went on a 7-0 run to get within 67-60 with 1:08 on the clock. Five of the Bulldog's points came from the foul line during the spurt.
• The Friars got two timely offensive rebounds with under a minute to play by Teneisia Brown and Sophi Hall, which eventually forced Butler to foul to stop the clock.
• The Friars were 6-6 from the free throw line in the final 32-seconds to seal the win. Orlagh Gormley was 4-4 during that stretch.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye scored in double figures for the 19th time this season. She finished with 19 points on 8-14 shooting and added eight rebounds and two assists. 
• Brown registered 16 points on 5-11 shooting and matched Gueye for the team lead on the boards with eight.
• Gormley tallied 13 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, and added three rebounds, three steals and one assist. She played just six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble (22 minutes overall in the game).
• Kaysia recorded a season-high 10 points on 5-7 shooting.
Ashley Dinges recorded a career-high four assists to go along with five points and five rebounds.
• With her lone assist of the game, Gormley reached 100 assists for the season. She is just the sixth Friar in the last 25 years to dish 100 assists in a season. Janai Crooms is the only Friar to do it in the last 10 years, and she achieved the mark twice (102 in 2021-22 and 111 in 2022-23).
• The Friars won back-to-back games in BIG EAST play for the first time this season. PC defeated Xavier, 66-50, in its previous game on Feb. 8.
• The Friars have earned 10 of their 12 victories this season at home in Alumni Hall, including four of their five BIG EAST wins.
• Providence improved to 8-3 on the season when scoring 65+ points, including a 4-0 mark when scoring 70+ points.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will travel to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown on Saturday, Feb. 14 at McDonough Arena. The game is slated to tipoff at 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
