Strong Second Half And Solid Defense Propels Friars To 59-54 Win At Georgetown

Sabou Gueye paced three Friars in double figures with 17 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Friars used a strong second half, propelled by solid defense, to defeat Georgetown, 59-54, on Feb. 14 at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. Providence improved to 13-14 on the season (6-10 BIG EAST), while the Hoyas dipped to 12-13 overall (5-11 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence led 6-3 before the Hoyas went on an 11-0 run to claim a 14-6 lead.
• The Friars were held scoreless for more than six minutes before Sabou Gueye converted a lay-up as time expired in the quarter (14-8).
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars claimed a 15-14 lead with a 7-0 scoring run to start the quarter. 
• Georgetown scored their first bucket of the frame with 5:19 and finished the quarter with a 12-4 scoring advantage.
• The Hoyas led 26-19 at halftime.
 
3RD QUARTER:
Teneisia Brown scored the Friars' first eight points to get her squad within three with 5:25 on the clock (30-27).
• Georgetown pushed back out to an eight point lead, but the Friars responded with a 9-0 run to go ahead 36-35. Seven of the Friars' nine points came off three Hoyas turnovers. 
• Providence outscored Georgetown 22-11 in the quarter overall and carried a 41-37 lead into the fourth.
• Brown scored 10 points in the quarter, while Sophi Hall added eight.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Hoyas used a 7-0 run to claim a 48-45 lead with 5:51 to play.
• Back-to-back buckets by Brown and Sabou Gueye put the Friars up one, but the Hoyas hit a three before the media timeout to regain the lead, 51-49, with 4:39 to play.
• A strong drive by Riley Hamburger tied the game and Gueye put PC ahead with a pair of free throws (53-51).
• Georgetown hit a triple on its next possession, but Hall matched it on the other end for the Friars. The bucket gave Providence a 56-54 lead with 1:43 to play.
• The Friars had an opportunity to make it a two possession game at the foul line but missed both attempts with 24.5-seconds left.
• Providence's defense bled 15 seconds off the clock with solid defense before causing a jump ball with 10-seconds to play.
• Georgetown maintained possession and the Friars forced another turnover with 4.8-seconds to play.
• The Hoyas appealed the play and lost the appeal. Georgetown did not have any timeouts remaining, so were assessed a a technical foul. 
• Gueye made one of two free throw attempts and the Friars were awarded possession by virtue of the technical.
• Gueye was sent to the line again with 2.7-seconds left and sealed the game by converting both foul shots (59-54). 
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye paced three Friars in double figures with 17 points and led the team with seven rebounds.
• Hall finished with 15 points on 5-9 shooting, including a 4-7 performance from three-point territory.
• Providence improved to 4-0 on the season when Hall scores in double figures.
• Brown added 14 points, six boards, one assist and two steals.
Orlagh Gormley collected a game-high five steals and dished a team-best three assists.
• The Friars have won three-straight regular-season games against Georgetown and swept the 2025-26 regular-season series (2-0).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18 against DePaul at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
