No. 2 Villanova Holds Off No. 7 Providence In BIG EAST Quarterfinals, 73-65

Sabou Gueye and Orlagh Gormley each netted 19 points for the Friars.

UNCASVILLE, CONN. – The No. 7-seed Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 2-seed Villanova, 73-65, in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Sabou Gueye and Orlagh Gormley each scored 19 points for the Friars as they concluded their season with a 15-18 overall record. Villanova improved to 24-6 overall and will play in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Sunday, March 8.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Villanova led 17-12 at the media timeout after starting the game 4-6 from three-point range.
• The Wildcats pushed out to a seven-point advantage at the intermission (23-16).
Sabou Gueye scored eight of the Friars' 16 points in the quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Villanova started the second frame with a 7-0 run.
Nalani Kaysia halted the Wildcats' run with a pair of free throws at the 7:24 mark (30-18).
Orlagh Gormley followed with back-to-back threes for an 8-0 Friar run, cutting Villanova's lead to 30-24.
• Villanova's Brynn McCurry scored a lay-in to stem the tide, but Providence used an 11-0 run (19-2 run overall) to claim a 35-32 lead at the 2:49 mark.
• The Wildcats finished the half with six unanswered points to take a 38-35 lead into halftime.
• Gormley scored nine of her team-best 13 first-half points in the second quarter and Gueye went into halftime with 12 points.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence started the third with a 5-0 spurt to claim a 40-38 advantage.
• Villanova outscored Providence 18-7 over the final 8:45 of the third to mount a 58-47 lead at the intermission.
• The Friars were scoreless over the final 5:09 of the third quarter.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Villanova led 69-51 with 7:23 to play.
• Providence cut the deficit to single digits (69-60) with a 9-0 run and 3:07 to play.
• The Friars were still trailing by nine with 1:24 to play when Villanova's Jasmine Bascoe was assessed a Flagrant 1.
• Gueye made two free throws and the Friars were awarded the ball trailing 71-63.
• Providence's defense held the Wildcats without a field goal over the final 2:35 of the game, but Villanova held on to win 73-65.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye followed up her 31-point performance in the First Round with 19 points against Villanova. She added eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
• Gormley notched 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Teneisia Brown rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15 points and contributed five boards, one assist and three steals.
• Providence won the glass with a 35-32 rebounding advantage.
