Friars' Win Streak Ends At Top-Ranked UConn, 81-38

The Friars will return to action on Feb. 26 at Creighton before returning home on March 1 to host Marquette in the regular-season finale.

STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to top-ranked UConn, 81-38, on Feb. 22 at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. The Friars dipped to 14-15 overall (7-11 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 29-0 (18-0 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
Sabou Gueye scored the first points of the game just 34-seconds into the action.
• UConn responded with a 18-0 run over the next 7:59.
Sophi Hall ended the drought for Providence with a three from the baseline with 55-seconds on the clock (18-5).
• Providence committed 14 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes, which UConn turned into 13 points.
• The Huskies held a 21-5 lead at the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Huskies opened the second quarter with a 13-2 scoring advantage to push their lead to 34-7.
• UConn took a 40-14 lead into halftime. 
 
3RD QUARTER:
• UConn held a slim 10-9 advantage in the scoring column through the first 5:31 of the third.
Princess Moody was 2-2 from three-point territory during the stretch and Payton Dunbar netted her second triple of the game (50-23).
• The Huskies went on an 11-0 run to claim a 61-23 advantage and force a Providence timeout.
• Gueye halted the run with a transition lay-up off a feed from Orlagh Gormley with 1:06 left on the clock.
• Connecticut closed the quarter with five unanswered points and carried a 66-25 lead into the fourth.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence started the fourth with an 11-4 scoring advantage.
• UConn finished the game with an 11-2 run to take the 81-38 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Moody matched her career-high in scoring, with 11 points on 4-7 shooting, including a 3-3 clip from three. She also added three assists and three steals.
• Moody has scored in double figures twice this season, with both games coming against UConn (11 points, Dec. 31).
• Dunbar finished with nine points on 3-5 shooting (all from three) and grabbed three rebounds and two steals.
• Providence entered the game on a four-game win streak. It marked the first four-game win streak in BIG EAST play since 1996.
• The Friars shot 62-percent from three-point territory in the game (8-13), marking their highest percentage in BIG EAST action.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 26 against Creighton at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb. Tipoff is slated for 9:00 p.m. (ET) and the game will be televised on TNT and truTV.
