PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former Providence College women's basketball standout
Sabou Gueye '26 (Dakar, Senegal) will play for Senegal's National Team in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. The tournament begins today and runs from August 17-23.
The event represents the first stop on the road to qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The winner of the tournament will punch its ticket to compete in the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, which will be held in February 2028. The eight participating national teams in the Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Senegal and South Sudan.
In her lone season with Providence (2025-26), Gueye played 33 games and averaged 15.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She shot an impressive 49-percent from the field (219-447) and 76-percent from the foul line (71-94). She was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team on March 5. Gueye is just the second Friar to earn First Team accolades in the last 32 years and first since 2010.
Gueye has competed with the Senegal National Team on two other occasions, including the 2026 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament held in Puerto Rico last March.
Gueye and Senegal open the tournament against Canada on Monday, Aug. 17. Joining Senegal and Canada in the Group Phase (Group B) are Mexico and Philippines.
