Earlette Scotts' Three-Point Play With 4.6-Seconds Remaining Gives Providence A 54-53 Win Over St. John's

Friars rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat the Red Storm in Providence, R.I.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 54-53, on Sunday, Feb. 16 in Providence, R.I. Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got fouled as she hit a pull-up jump shot with 4.6 seconds remaining to tie the game, 53-53. She finished the three-point play by converting her free throw to give Providence a 54-53 lead. It marked the Friars' first lead of the afternoon and held on for the win. The Friars improved to 11-15 overall (2-12 BIG EAST). The Red Storm dropped to 8-7 in the BIG EAST and 15-11 overall.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) scored all eight points for the Friars on 3-4 shooting from the field, and also was 2-2 from the line.
• St. John's held a 14-8 advantage at the conclusion of the first 10 minutes.
• Both teams struggled from the floor as the Friars shot 21-percent (3-14) from the field and the Red Storm shot 23-percent (3-13). St. John's converted on six of eight free throws in the quarter, which was the difference on the scoreboard.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• St. John's used a 14-0 run to claim its first double-digit lead of the game, 24-8.
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) ended the near seven-minute scoring drought for the Friars with a step-back jump shot from the free throw line.
• Providence ended the half on a 10-2 run and trailed 26-18 at the break. 
• St. John's was held scoreless for the last 2:30 of the half.
• Baskerville led all scorers with eight points on 3-4 shooting and 2-2 from the line.
• St. John's held a 25-20 rebounding advantage led by six rebounds from Raven Farley.
• In the half, Providence shot 25-percent (8-32) from the field and were 0-7 from beyond the arc.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) brought the Friars within five with three pointer fro the left wing begin the scoring in the second half.
• St. John's responded with a 12-3 run to push its lead back to double figures.
• The Friars ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to pull within seven points (41-34). St. John's was held scoreless for the last three minutes of the frame.
• Spiwak led the Friars with eight points on 3-6 shooting, including a 2-3 performance from deep in the third quarter.
• Providence shot 45.5-percent (5-11) from the field, 50-percent (3-6) from three and 100-percent (2-2) from the line in the quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
Earlette Scott's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) free-throws pulled the Friars within three with 6:27 remaining (44-41).
• Geary's feed to Baskerville for an and-one tied the game up for the Friars at 44 with 5:47 left.
• St. John's scored five-straight points, but Providence responded with five of its own to tie it with 1:36 remaining.
• Providence trailed by two when Earlette Scott hit an and-one jumper with 4.6 seconds remaining. Her free-throw with 4.6 left gave Providence its first lead of the game.
• St. John's had a chance at the rim as time expired but Scott blocked Alissa Alston's shot to preserve the win for Providene.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence only led for 4.6 seconds in the game.
• Baskerville (13 points) and Geary (10) points were the only Friars in double-figures. 
•Baskerville also led the Friars in rebounds (seven) and tied for team-highs in assists (three) and blocks (two).
• Providence shot 33.3-percent (20-60) from the field, 31.6-percent (6-19) from deep and 88.9-percent (8-9) from the line.
• St. John's shot 32.7-percent (17-52) from the field, 31.6-percent (6-19) from three-point range and 81.3-percent (13-16) from the charity stripe.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Friars travel to Xavier and Butler next weekend. Providence will take on the Musketeers on Friday, Feb. 21 at 11:30 a.m. in Cincinnati, Ohio. and the Bulldogs on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). This is the final regular season road-trip for the Friars this season.
