Women's Hoops Falls To Xavier On The Road, 61-42

Kaela Webb netted a team-best 12 points.

CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Xavier, 61-42, on Friday, Feb. 21 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Friars dropped to 11-16 overall (2-13 BIG EAST), while the Musketeers improved to 3-23 (2-13 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• Providence started the game 1-8 from the field heading into the first media timeout (3:42), with Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) connecting on the lone bucket off a feed from Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
• Xavier used a 6-0 run to take a 10-2 lead and held a 12-5 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
• The Friars shot just 2-12 from the field (.167), while Xavier hit 5-13 shot attempts in the opening quarter (5-13).
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• A 5-0 run early in the second quarter game Xavier a 19-8 lead, but Baskerville got the Friars back on the board with a lay-up at 7:22 to make it a 19-10 game.
• Baskerville's bucket started a 10-0 run to get Providence within one (19-18) with 2:23 remaining in the frame.
• Deja Ross halted the run at 2:06 with a pair of free throws as the Musketeers got into the bonus.
• Xavier took a 21-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) paced Providence with six points in the first half.
• Providence held a 21-17 advantage on the boards, led by Hevynne Bristow's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) five rebounds.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the scoring in the third as Baskerville gave Providence its first lead (22-21) just 49-seconds into the action.
• Xavier answered with a 6-2 run to regain the lead (27-24), forcing a Providence College timeout with 6:25 on the clock.
Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) knocked down a three in transition to tie the game, 27-27, at the 5:44 mark.
• Xavier used an 11-0 run take a 38-27 lead with 2:47 on the clock.
Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) stopped the Musketeers run with a pair of free throws and Baskerville hit one of two from the line on the Friars' next possession to get Providence within eight (38-30) with just over a minute to play.
• Xavier took a 40-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Providence went on an 8-2 run in the first 1:14 of the quarter, fueled by back-to-back three-point buckets by Webb on each of the Friars' first two possessions (42-38). 
• Xavier finished the game with a 19-4 scoring advantage to take a 61-42 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• A'riana Gray notched a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for Xavier, while Ayanna Townsend contributed 10 points.
• Webb was the lone Friar in double figures with 12 points, and she was one of three players with five rebounds.
• Baskerville finished with nine points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
• Xavier topped the Friars on the glass, 41-33, and outscored Providence 16-6 overall in second chance points.
• The Musketeers dominated the paint with a 38-18 scoring edge.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on Butler in their final regular-season road game of the year on Sunday, Feb. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Providence will conclude its regular-season schedule against Georgetown (Feb. 28) and Villanova (Mar. 1) at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
