Seton Hall Uses Strong Third Quarter To Defeat Women's Hoops, 71-45

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe Seton Hall, 71-45, on Friday, Feb. 14 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The game served as the backdrop for the program's 13th Annual Project Providence event, which welcomed over 1,400 elementary and middle-school students from Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
FIRST QUARTER:
• Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) combined to score six of the Friars' first eight points heading into the media timeout (4:07). Seton Hall held a 10-8 lead at the break.
• A 9-2 run gave Seton Hall a 17-10 lead, but the Friars got three-straight points from Geary to get PC within 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.
• Geary paced Providence with eight points in the opening 10 minutes on 3-4 shooting.
SECOND QUARTER:
• Seton Hall opened the second frame with back-to-back three pointers to extend its lead to 10 (23-13) at the 8:53 mark.
• The Pirates started the quarter on a 9-0 run to claim a 25-13 advantage.
• Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) sank a pair of free throws for the Friars at 7:54 to halt the run and give Providence its first points.
• Providence endured a scoring drought of nearly three minutes before Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) completed a traditional three-point play to make the score 29-19.
• It sparked an 8-0 run for the Friars, who cut the deficit to five (29-24) with 2:13 on the clock.
• Seton Hall took a 33-24 lead into halftime.
• Providence shot just 23-percent from the field in the first half (7-31), compared to 41-percent shooting for Seton Hall (12-29).
THIRD QUARTER:
• Seton Hall used a 7-0 run to take a 43-28 lead.
• Geary ended the Pirates run with a strong drive to the hoop for her 10th point of the game at the 6:24 mark (43-30).
• A 21-2 run for the Pirates resulted in a 57-30 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
• Providence was scoreless for the final 6:24 of the third quarter and was outscored 24-6 during the frame.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Pirates held a 68-36 lead at the final media timeout of the game (4:38).
• The Friars used a 7-0 run during a span of 1:36 to get within 69-43 with 1:43 to play.
• Providence outscored Seton Hall, 15-14, in the final 10 minutes.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Geary paced the Friars with 12 points and six rebounds.
• Scott added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
• Baskerville contributed seven points, six boards and a team-best three blocks and two assists.
• Five Pirates reached double figures in the scoring column, with Desiree Elmore and Barbara Johnson each scoring a team-best 12 points.
