Friars Host Seton Hall For 13th Annual Project Providence Event

Women's basketball set to host the Pirates in BIG EAST action on Friday at 11:30 a.m.

FRIARS SET TO HOST SETON HALL... Providence will host BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Friday, Feb. 14 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to accommodate the program's 13th Annual Project Providence event. 

13TH ANNUAL PROJECT PROVIDENCE... The women's basketball program will host its 13th Annual Project Providence event on Friday, Feb. 14 as the Friars take on Seton Hall. Project Providence "Forming The Future With The Friars" is an educational opportunity for local elementary/middle schools to engage with members of the Providence College community to learn about the importance of education, proper nutrition, exercise and good sportsmanship. Each attendee also receives a study guide, which covers various subjects such as mathematics, grammar and geography. This year's event will welcome over 1,400 students from schools located in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. 

PROVIDENCE VS. SETON HALL ALL-TIME... Friday's game between Providence and Seton Hall marks the 70th meeting all-time between the two women's basketball programs. The Pirates lead the all-time series, 39-30, including victories in 14 of the last 16 meetings.

FRIARS AND PIRATES AT ALUMNI HALL... Providence has earned victories in two of the last three games against the Pirates at Alumni Hall, including the most recent meeting played at the facility on Feb. 8, 2019 (82-75). The Friars lead the all-time series on their home court, 17-12.

FIRST MEETING OF SEASON SERIES... In the first meeting of the season series, Seton Hall claimed a 97-55 victory over the Friars in South Orange, N.J. The Pirates scored 17 unanswered points to close the first quarter and also used a 22-0 run in the second quarter to help mount a 53-15 lead at halftime. The Friars outscored the Pirates, 26-24 in the third quarter while shooting an impressive 10-14 from the field (71-percent), but the game was already out of reach. Mary Baskerville paced the Friars with 14 points on 6-7 shooting. Shadeen Samuels (23) and Alexis Lewis (20) combined to score 43 points for the Pirates. The Friars committed 23 turnovers in the game and Seton Hall boasted a 28-6 advantage on the scoreboard in points off of turnovers.

ROAD WARRIORS... The Friars have played 17 of their 24 games on the road. The Friars are 5-9 in true road games and 2-1 on a neutral court to post a combined 7-10 mark away from home. The Friars have suffered losses in each of their last seven road games. 

THREE OR MORE DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORERS... Providence owns a 7-4 record this season when three or more Friars reach double-digits in the scoring column. Three of the four losses have come during each of the Friars' last games vs. Marquette, DePaul and Creighton. The Friars had three double-digit scorers against the Golden Eagles and four players in double figures against DePaul and Creighton.

10-POINTS OR LESS... Seven of the Friars' 13 losses in BIG EAST Conference play have been decided by 10 points or less, including six losses within single digits.

PROVIDENCE HALTS EIGHT-GAME SKID WITH WIN OVER XAVIER... Providence College snapped an eight-game winless streak with a 60-48 victory over Xavier on Jan. 26. During the eight-game skid, six of the Friars' eight losses were decided by 10 points or less.  

FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 5-4 in overtime games under the direction of Head Coach Jim Crowley, including a 3-0 mark last season (2018-19). The Friars are 3-3 vs. BIG EAST opponents in overtime. The Friars have yet to play an overtime game during the 2019-20 campaign.

DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDS... Mary Baskerville (12) and Alyssa Geary (10) each recorded double-digit rebounds on Jan. 24 vs. Butler. The last time two Friars recorded double-digit rebounds in the same game dates back to the 2014-15 season. On Jan. 11, 2015, Alexis Harris (11) and Chanise Baldwin (12) achieved the feat against Seton Hall.

MARY BASKERVILLE RECORDS 10th CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE... Mary Baskerville notched her fourth double-double of the season and the 10th of her career on Jan. 17 against St. John's. She netted 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Red Storm. It also marked the second double-double for Baskerville during BIG EAST play in 2019-20, and six of her 10 career double-doubles have been recorded during regular-season conference play overall.

EARLETTE SCOTT STEPPING UP ON OFFENSE... Sophomore guard Earlette Scott has reached double figures in 10 games this season, including six double-digit games during BIG EAST Conference play. Over the course of the Friars' last five games, she has hit double digits four times and has averaged 12.0 points per game in that span. 

ALL SOPHOMORE LINE-UP... Providence has featured an all sophomore starting line-up in each of its last three games. Mary Baskerville (21 starts) and Kaela Webb (24 starts) have started every game they have played this season, and have recently been joined by Earlette Scott (8 starts), Alyssa Geary (10 starts) and Sophia Widmeyer (3 starts). In 24 games overall this season, 10 different players have seen time in the starting line-up.

LOOKING FOR CHANELL WILLIAMS TO MAINTAIN SPARK... Junior guard Chanell Williams missed the Friars' most recent game with an illness. Prior to the Creighton game, Williams posted back-to-back double-digit scoring games against Marquette (10 points) and DePaul (15 point). Her 15 points against the Blue Demons marked a season high. She previously netted a season-best 12 points against UMass Lowell (Nov. 24).

BLOCK PARTY... Mary Baskerville stands atop of the BIG EAST with 1.8 blocked shots per game. In 21 games played, Baskerville has recorded 38 blocked shots. Alyssa Geary ranks fifth, with 1.5 blocked shots per game and 36 rejections overall. Eighteen of Geary's 36 blocks have come during BIG EAST regular-season action (1.6 bpg) which ranks third in the BIG EAST. Both players are approaching the top-three for blocks by a sophomore in program history. Mary Ann McCoy leads the way with 68 blocks, followed by Andrea Mangum (41) and Emily Cournoyer (39). Last season, Baskerville recorded a program record for a freshman with 53 blocked shots.

MARY BASKERVILLE AMONG NCAA CAREER LEADERS IN FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE... Mary Baskerville ranks 21st in the nation among NCAA Division I active career leaders in field goal percentage. In 56 career games, Baskerville has hit 245-432 shot attempts (.567). This season, she is shooting 55.0-percent (104-189), which ranks second in the BIG EAST. As a rookie in 2018-19, she recorded the second-highest field-goal percentage in program history for a single-season, and set the program's all-time record for field-goal percentage by a freshman (.580, 141-243).

FRIARS RANK 21st IN THE NATION IN THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE... The Friars enter the weekend ranked first in the BIG EAST and 21st in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.365). Providence has hit 148-405 attempts from beyond the arc through 24 games.

WEBB AND SPIWAK LEAD THE CHARGE FROM DEEP... Kaela Webb and Kyra Spiwak lead the Friars from beyond the arc this season, with each shooting above 40-percent. Webb is shooting a team-best .407 from beyond the arc (59-145), which ranks third in the BIG EAST and 36th in the nation. Webb also is tied for third in the BIG EAST with 2.5 made three-pointers per game. Spiwak is shooting .405 from deep, which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST and she currently sits in 15th place among her league peers in three-point field goals made per game (1.5).

AT THE HALF... Providence has led or has been tied with its opponent at the half in 13 of its 24 games, including four of 11 BIG EAST Conference games.  The Friars have posted a 7-6 record in those games.

REBOUNDING BY COMMITTEE... Through 24 games, nine different players have led the team in rebounding. Mary Baskerville has led the Friars on the boards 13 times. 

STAYING ON THE COURT... Mary Baskerville has played 21 of the Friars' 24 games this season and is averaging 21.0 minutes per game. She has played 20+ minutes in just 10 games overall. Despite limited minutes, she's been putting up impressive numbers. She is shooting 55-percent from the floor (104-189) and has hit double figures in the scoring column 14 times, including two 20-point games. She also leads Providence with four double-doubles and seven double-digit rebounding games. The unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection leads the team in scoring (12.9 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and blocked shots (1.8 bpg).

DOMINANT THIRD QUARTER PROPELS FRIARS... The Friars entered halftime facing a seven-point deficit against Xavier on Jan. 26. (22-15). Xavier bumped its lead to eight early in the third, but Providence used a 21-3 run to turn the tables and gain a 38-28 lead. The Musketeers closed within five on three occasions during the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, but Providence out-scored Xavier 17-10 to close the game and take the win, including a 8-8 performance from the free throw line in the final 1:47 of play. Earlette Scott netted a career-high 20 points, including 17 point in the second half of play. Alyssa Geary added 14 points and eight rebounds and Kaela Webb contributed 10 points. Webb and Scott teamed up to score 17 of the Friars' final 22 points in the game.

KAELA WEBB COMES UP BIG IN THE FOURTH QUARTER AGAINST XAVIER... Sophomore Kaela Webb scored 10 of her 12 points against Xavier in the fourth quarter on Jan. 26. She played all 10 minutes in the frame, shooting 3-3 from the field (2-2, 3FGM-3FGA) and 2-2 from the charity stripe. She also added one assist and one steal in the quarter and did not commit a turnover.

FRIARS FINISH NON-CONFERENCE PLAY AT 9-3... Providence College concluded its non-conference schedule with a 9-3 record. Jim Crowley has led the Friars to at least eight wins in regular-season non-conference play during three of his four years at the helm. Last year, Providence finished the non-conference slate 8-4 and in 2016-17 the Friars also posted an 8-4 mark. Crowley's lowest win total in the non-conference action with Providence came during the 2017-18 season (7-6). 

FRIARS IMPROVE TO 14-5 UNDER JIM CROWLEY AT IN-SEASON TOURNAMENTS... Providence improved to 14-5 under Jim Crowley when competing at in-season tournaments, with a 3-2 record during the 2019-20 campaign. Providence won the 4th Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament, defeating Bryant (76-32) and Rhode Island (58-51). The Friars posted a 1-2 mark  at the Lobo Invitational to close non-conference play (Dec. 18-20). Providence suffered losses to host New Mexico (86-68), Ball State (52-51) and defeated Loyola Marymount (48-45).

FRIARS WIN 2019 OCEAN STATE TIP-OFF TITLE... The Friars defeated in-state rivals Bryant (76-32) and Rhode Island (58-51) in the 4th Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament held in Smithfield, R.I. on Dec. 7-8. It marked the Friars' first championship in the tournament's existence. Mary Baskerville was named Most Outstanding Player, while Earlette Scott claimed All-Tournament Team honors.

FRIARS POST LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY SINCE 1991... The Friars defeated Bryant, 76-32, in the opening round of the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 7 in Smithfield, R.I. Providence's 44-point margin of victory is the largest since defeating Syracuse by 46 (106-60) on Feb. 20, 1991.

EARLETTE SCOTT NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Sophomore Earlette Scott was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Jan. 27. It marked the first league honor of her career. She averaged a team-best 16.5 points per game and added 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist against Butler and Xavier the previous weekend. She shot 9-17 from the field (.529), including 3-7 from beyond the arc (.429). Additionally, she hit 12-16 attempts from the foul line.  In the Friars' victory over Xavier, Scott scored a career-high 20 points, including 17 points in the second half to help Providence overcome an eight-point deficit in the third quarter. She shot 4-10 from the field against the Musketeers and hit 11-13 free throws overall, including a perfect 6-6 from the stripe in the final 1:47 of play. Scott also matched her career high on the glass with eight rebounds. In the team's loss to Butler on Friday night, Scott scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and added four rebounds. 

MARY BASKERVILLE NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Mary Baskerville was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 9. She guided the Friars to a 2-1 record last week, and also was named Most Outstanding Player at the 4th Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 8. In three games, Baskerville averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game, and shot 63.3-percent from the field (19-30). In the Friars' lone loss, she tallied 19 points and nine rebounds against Yale. That game originally began on Nov. 5, before it was suspended at halftime. The Friars and Bulldogs completed the second half of play on Dec. 3 in New Haven, Conn. At the Ocean State Tip-Off in Smithfield, R.I., Baskerville tallied 14 points and four rebounds in 15 minutes of action against Bryant. She followed with 15 points and five rebounds in the championship game against Rhode Island. Baskerville scored 11 of her 15 points in a decisive fourth quarter effort, while shooting 4-4 from the field, to give Providence a 58-51 victory.

KAELA WEBB NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL IN BACK-TO-BACK WEEKS... Sophomore Kaela Webb was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in back-to-back weeks to start the season (Nov. 11 and Nov. 18). It marks her first appearances on the league's weekly honor roll, having previously been recognized among the weekly award winners as BIG EAST Freshman of the Week last season (Jan. 21). 

TOP SHOOTING PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON CLOUDED BY LOSS... The Friars shot a season-best 58.5-percent from the field (31-53) and tied their season-best shooting performance from beyond the arc (.500, 8-16) in their loss to Yale. Despite Providence's impressive shooting, Yale held a +14 scoring advantage at the foul line. The Bulldogs converted 23-32 attempts at the charity stripe, compared to the Friars' 9-15 shooting at the line.

CROWLEY PICKS UP 300th NCAA DIVISION I HEAD COACHING VICTORY... Providence College Head Coach Jim Crowley picked up his 300th NCAA Division I victory on Nov. 9 as the Friars defeated UMass, 72-63. Crowley compiled 258 NCAA Division I wins in 16 seasons at St. Bonaventure (2000-16) and currently owns 51 wins at Providence in his fourth season with the program. 

FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH TIED FOR FIFTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES' POLL... Providence College was picked to finish in a tie for fifth place in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Oct. 10 at Madison Square Garden as part of the league's annual media day event. 

MARY BASKERVILLE NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM AS ONE OF FOUR UNANIMOUS SELECTIONS... Sophomore Mary Baskerville was a unanimous selection to the 2019-20 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, announced at the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 10. She earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year accolades at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season, in addition to a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. She is just the second player in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year recognition, and first since Friar great Tracy Lis '92 was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 1989. Baskerville also was a five-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, marking the most freshman of the week honors in program history.  As a rookie, Baskerville averaged 9.5 points per game and led the Friars in rebounding (7.3 rpg), blocked shots (1.5 bpg), double-doubles (six) and field-goal percentage (.580, 141-243). She established program records for blocked shots (53) and field-goal percentage (.580) for a freshman. Additionally, her .580 field-goal percentage was the second-highest for a single-season in program history overall, trailing Elizabeth Lawlor's shooting clip of .581 (193-332) during the 1988-89 season.

MOST WINS IN BIG EAST PLAY SINCE 1996-97... The Friars completed the 2018-19 regular-season schedule with an 8-10 mark in the BIG EAST Conference and finished in tie for sixth place in the league standings.  The Friars' eight wins were the most in conference play since 1996-97, when Providence also finished with an 8-10 mark.  It marked just the fourth time in the last 20 years that the Friars have recorded six or more victories in league play. 

FRIARS COMING OFF OF FIRST POST-SEASON APPEARANCE SINCE 2010... The Friars' 2019 WNIT selection marked the program's 15th post-season appearance overall and first since 2010.  Complete post-season breakdown below (records in parentheses).

The Friars will remain home to host St. John's for their  annual Pink Out Friartown game on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m. The game supports the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Providence will be wearing custom pink uniforms during the game, and all fans are enouraged to wear pink.
