PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey program claimed two of three weekly awards handed out by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday, Oct. 7. Sophomore
Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) claimed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
Collins played a critical role for the Friars on both sides of the field last week in victories over Villanova and Dartmouth. She helped anchor a defense that allowed a total of six shots on goal through two games. The Friars held Villanova in check for one shot on goal, while Dartmouth managed just five shots on target. Offensively, Collins led the Friars in scoring with five points on two goals and one assist. She tallied her first goal of the year against Villanova, to give Providence a 1-0 lead just 7:11 into the game. Collins followed with a single-game career high of three points against Dartmouth, with one goal and one assist.
Gowing, who is a sophomore academically, is in the midst of her first season of collegiate field hockey. Last week, she was credited with the game-winning goal in each of Providence's victories. Against Villanova, Gowing scored the go-ahead goal at 33:14 of the third quarter to give Providence a 2-1 lead. It also marked her first career goal in BIG EAST Conference action. Gowing scored her second goal of the weekend in a 5-1 victory over Dartmouth.
The Friars have posted a 7-4 overall record this season, including a 2-1 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11 against No. 3 Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. The Friars will close the weekend with a home game against New Hampshire on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m. on Lennon Family Field.
