Field Hockey Set To Host 14th-Ranked Northwestern

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team will host 14th-ranked Northwestern in non-conference action on Tuesday, Aug. 29. The match will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (1-0): The Providence College field hockey team enters Tuesday's non-conference match against 14th-ranked Northwestern with a 1-0 overall record. The Friars opened the 2017 campaign with a 1-0 victory against 24th-ranked Maine on Aug. 25.

Last year, the Friars finished the season with a 13-6 overall record and finished second in the BIG EAST Conference with a 5-2 mark in league play.

Sophomore Sylvia Miller (Severn, Md.) is the team's leading returning scorer, having posted 18 points on eight goals and two assists during her rookie campaign. Senior midfielder Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) finished the 2016 slate with 13 points on five goals and three assists, marking her third-consecutive season with double-digit points.

Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) played 1,400 minutes in the cage for Providence last year and posted a 1.40 goals against average and a 0.750 save percentage. She also registered three shut-out victories.

In the Friars' 2017 season opener vs. Maine [Aug. 25], sophomore Allyson Parker (Orange, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 8:33 remaining in regulation to lift Providence to a 1-0 victory. It marked the first goal of her collegiate career at PC. Guilbert collected four saves in the cage for the Friars and notched her fourth career shut-out victory, and first shut-out win against a nationally-ranked opponent. Parker and Guilbert were subsequently named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for their performances on Aug. 28.


SCOUTING #14 NORTHWESTERN (1-1): The 14th-ranked Northwestern field hockey team enters Tuesday's match with a 1-1 overall record. The Wildcats opened the season with a 1-0 victory against 13th-ranked Stanford on Aug. 26, before falling to 4th-ranked Connecticut, 7-0, on Aug. 27.

The Wildcats return eight starters from last year's team that posted a 13-8 overall record, including senior Sophia Miller, who was recognized as a First-Team All-Big Ten selection and Second-Team All-West Region pick in 2016. Redshirt junior forward Pascale Massey is the team's top-returning goal scorer, having recorded 13 goals and a total of 27 points in 2016. Miller, Massey and senior midfielder Elena Curley have been named Big Ten Players to Watch entering the 2017 campaign.

Eva van Agt scored the lone goal for Northwestern just 2:01 into the Wildcats' season-opening match against Stanford. Through two games, van Agt has tallied four shots, and each have been on target. Puck Pentenga leads the team with nine shot attempts overall, including four which were on frame (.444 SOG%).

Annie Kalfus has played all 70 minutes in the cage for Northwestern and earned the shut-out victory vs. Stanford with a total of six saves. Kalfus started the match against UConn and played 35:00 minutes (8 saves/3 goals against), before being relieved by Florien Marcussen for the second half (2 saves/4 goals against). Overall, Kalfus owns a 2.57 goals against average and a 0.824 save percentage through two games. Marcussen holds a 10.29 goals against average and a 0.333 save percentage.


LAST TIME THE TWO TEAMS MET: Providence and Northwestern last met during the 2013 season. In that match, the Friars came away with a 2-1 overtime victory against the Wildcats, who were ranked 11th in the nation at the time of the game.


FAMILIAR FOES: Providence Head Coach Diane Madl and Northwestern Head Coach Tracey Fuchs were teammates for three seasons at the University of Connecticut, and led the Huskies to the NCAA National Championship in 1985. Madl was a two-time All-America selection for the Huskies in 1987 and 1988 and recipient of the Honda Broderick Award after completion of her senior campaign. Fuchs was a three-time All-American and also earned the Honda Broderick Award as a senior (1987). The Honda Broderick Award recognizes the nation's top collegiate field hockey player. Madl and Fuchs also were teammates on the U.S. Field Hockey squad that competed in the 1996 Olympic Games (Atlanta).


WHAT'S NEXT: Providence will play a pair of games this weekend against intra-state rivals Brown and Bryant. The Friars will host the Brown Bears on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Noon on Lennon Family Field. The match between Providence and Bryant is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 3 and will be played at Brown University at 1:00 p.m.
