ORLANDO, FLA. - The Providence College Softball team opened up the University of Central Florida Invitational Tournament with games against the University of Central Florida and Florida Gulf Coast University in Orlando on March 3. The Friars lost against UCF, 11-10 before losing to FGCU, 10-6.
The first game of the day turned into an extra innings marathon. The scoring was back and forth the entire game. UCF scored once in the bottom of the first but Providence tied the game in the top of the third, 1-1. UCF then added three runs in the bottom of the third to lead 4-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, Providence scored four times to take the lead until UCF responded in the bottom of the inning by also scoring four runs to lead 8-5. UCF would then add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 10-5. The Friars would not go quietly, however, as they scored five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 10-10. This is how the score would remain until UCF scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game 11-10.
Both Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) recorded two hits in the loss. Lundstrom and Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit home runs as well.
Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game in the loss to bring her season record to 2-2. In 7.1 innings, Ramirez gave up 15 hits and 8 earned runs while striking out three.
In the second game of the day, Providence struck first. Lee started the game off by reaching base on an error and scored on a triple by Portillo. However, FGCU responded in the bottom of the first inning by scoring three runs to lead 3-1. The Eagles then built upon this lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring 5 runs to lead 8-1.
The Friars began to chip away at the FGCU lead in the 5th inning after Lundstrom started the inning off with a homerun. Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) then drew a walk. Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) pinch ran for Rurka and advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Portillo. Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) drove in Flego with a single up the middle to bring the score to 8-3. FGCU added another two runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 10-3.
In the top of the 6th, Lee bunt singled to start the rally and then advanced to third on a double by Lundstrom. After a fly out by Rurka, Portillo hit a three-run home run to left field to bring the score to 10-6.
Still down four, the Friars made a final push in the top of the 7th inning. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) began the inning with a single up the middle. Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) then pinch ran for McCune and advanced to second after Taylor Stephen (Monarch Beach, Calif.) reached base on an error. Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) then pinch ran for Stephen. After a fly out by Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.), Lee drew a walk to advance Abbatiello and Mendez. Lundstrom drove in Abbatiello on a fielder's choice to first base. The Friars would not score again, leaving the score at 10-7.
Portillo drove in four runs on two hits in the loss. Lee, Lundstrom and McCune all tallied two hits as well.
McCune pitched two innings, giving up eight on 10 hits to be the pitcher of record (0-2). Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) pitched four innings in relief, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs.
The Friars return to action with a game against FGCU on March 4 at 2:00 p.m.
