PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team hosted its annual season-ending banquet at the Rhode Island Convention Center on Friday, January 15. Seniors Jeff Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.) and Manny Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) were honored for their dedication and commitment to the program.
The team's annual award winners also were announced. For the second-consecutive year, junior Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) received the Karl Anderson Offensive MVP Award, while Kilday picked up the Martin Hayes Defensive MVP Award. The John Murphy Team Award went to junior Mark Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.), while the David Kreinsen Unsung Hero Award went to junior Nick Sailor (Bloomfield, Conn.). Junior Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) was awarded the Bill Doyle Academic Achievement Award and the Fr. William Folsey Champion of Character Award went to Andrade.
The Friars posted an 8-7-3 record, including a 4-4-1 in BIG EAST play during the 2015 season. Five individuals earned All-BIG EAST Team accolades and two were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
In the BIG EAST First Round, the Friars traveled to then No. 3 seed Butler on Nov. 8. At the end of regulation, the two teams were tied, 2-2, which sent the game in to overtime. The scored remained tied at the end of the two, 10-minute overtime periods, and the game was decided in penalty kicks. Providence came out on top with a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks to advance to the BIG EAST Semifinal game.
In the BIG EAST Semifinal, the Friars traveled to No. 2 seed and fifth-ranked Creighton on Nov. 12. Providence battled to a 2-1 loss against the Bluejays, with the lone Friar goal coming from Gressel off of a free-kick.Gressel and Kilday each earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the championship.
