PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's soccer head coach Craig Stewart announced today (Aug. 25) that red-shirt senior Jeff Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.), senior Manny Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) and junior Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) have been named team captains for the 2015 season.
The trio of Kilday, Andrade and Gressel were instrumental in helping the Friars (16-5-2) secure the programs' first BIG EAST Championship title and NCAA College Cup appearance last season. The team also had the most wins (16) in a season by any Providence College men's soccer team in the history of the program.
Kilday, a defender, started all 20 of the games he played during the 2014 season. He helped the Friars record eight shutouts last season, one of which he recorded his first career goal, a 2-0 shutout of Holy Cross. Kilday also was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice in 2014 (Sept. 8 and Oct. 6).
Andrade, a midfielder, played in nine games last season before sustaining a season-ending injury. In those nine games he registered two goals for four points. During the 2013 season, Andrade collected three goals and three assists for nine points, was named to the BIG EAST Weekly honor roll on Oct. 14 and was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
Gressel, a midfielder, started 21 of the 22 games he played in 2014. He finished ranked fourth on the team in goals (5), points (15) and shots (44). He recorded the game-winning goal in the BIG EAST quarterfinal against Villanova on Nov. 11, was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27 and was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. In addition, Gressel was one of 12 players in the BIG EAST Conference to be named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. The honor marked the second consecutive year that Gressel has received Preseason All-BIG EAST Team honors.
The Friars open their season this Friday (Aug. 28) with a home game at 7:00 p.m. against Bryant.
