PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today (June 18) by Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley O.P. and Athletics Director Bob Driscoll that men's soccer Head Coach Craig Stewart has signed a long-term contract extension.

"We are excited that we will have Craig Stewart coaching the Friars for many years to come," Driscoll said. "In a short time he has demonstrated that he is one of the top coaches in college soccer. He has led the team to back-to-back BIG EAST final appearances, a BIG EAST Championship, back-to-back NCAA appearances and an NCAA College Cup appearance. Through his leadership, the team will continue to compete for Championships and continue to be one of the most respected programs in the nation."

"I am very excited to sign a long term contract extension," Stewart said. "I would like to thank Father Shanley and Bob Driscoll for their continued support and leadership. I am fortunate to work alongside a great team of administrators, coaches and student-athletes who are committed to working hard every day towards achieving success both on and off the field. T his past year really showed what can be possible at Providence College and with the construction of the new stadium on campus, it truly is a great time to be a Friar."

In his three years as head coach of the Friars, Stewart has led the men's soccer team to back-to-back NCAA appearances in 2013 and 2014, including the team's first ever NCAA College Cup semifinal appearance in 2014. The 2014 season was the most successful season in Friar men's soccer history. On top of leading the Friars to their first NCAA College Cup appearance, Stewart also coached the team to the program's first BIG EAST Championship title and a program record 16 wins.

Stewart has had additional success with individual players. Upon the conclusion of the 2014 season, Stewart coached Phil Towler '15 to his first All-America honor and the fourth in Providence College men's soccer history. He also coached five All-Region recipients and six All-BIG EAST Team honorees (the most in a single season from a Providence College men's soccer team). Sophomore Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) was named to the College Cup All-Tournament Team and he earned the College Cup Most Valuable Offensive Player award. By being named College Cup Offensive MVP, Steeves became the first player in the 31 seasons that a Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the College Cup has been selected (including each of the past 18 seasons) to earn the honor while playing for a team that did not advance to the Cup final. During the BIG EAST Tournament, Providence swept the MVP awards with Markus Naglestad '14 and Brandon Adler '15 receiving Most Outstanding Offensive and Defensive Players of the Tournament, respectively. Keasel Broome '14 and sophomore Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der aisch, Germany) were also named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team.

Stewart was named the fourth Providence College men's soccer head coach on May 29, 2012. Prior to Providence, Stewart spent three seasons as the head coach at Franklin Peirce University. In 2011, he guided the team to a 21-1-1 overall record as the team captured the Northeast-10 Conference regular season and tournament championships for the second consecutive season. In addition, the team earned a trip to the NCAA Final Four. In
three seasons, Stewart led Franklin Pierce to a 51-8-6 overall record, two Northeast-10 Conference championships (regular season and tournament), two trips to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and one trip to the Final Four.

Prior to Franklin Pierce, Stewart served as an assistant coach at Providence College for three seasons (2006-08) under Chaka Daley. While at Providence, Stewart helped the Friars to consecutive NCAA Tournament berths and a trip to the 2006 BIG EAST Semifinals. Stewart spent the 2005 season as an assistant coach at Northeastern University.
