PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team held its annual season-ending banquet at the Rhode Island Convention Center on Saturday, Jan. 24. The team's eight graduating players, Phil Towler (Cumbria, England), Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.), Brandon Adler (Montville, N.J.), Fabio Machado (Santa Catarina, Brazil), Markus Naglestad (Kristiansand, Norway), Rob Bialy (East Greenwich, R.I.), Thomas Ballenthin (Lexington, Mass.), Cris Huacon (Kearny, N.J.) and team manager, Chris Wasilewski, were honored for their dedication and commitment to the program.
The team's annual award winners were also announced. Fabio Machado and sophomore Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) were named Karl Anderson Co-Offensive MVP award recipients and were presented their award by Karl Anderson `88. Towler picked up the Martin Hayes Defensive MVP award, while Ballenthin and Bialy shared the David Kreinsen Unsung Hero award. The John Murphy Team Award went to Adler and Wasilewski, and Father Folsey was present to award Broome with the Fr. William Folsey Champion of Character Award. The Bill Doyle Academic Achievement award went to Jake Drew (Westwood, Mass.).

Also at the banquet, Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., Athletic Director Bob Driscoll and Associate AD Carl Labranche were guest speakers and congratulated the team on its historic season.
On Nov. 16, the Friars won their first ever BIG EAST Championship title with a 2-1 win over Xavier at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Prior to the BIG EAST Tournament, six members of the men's soccer team were named to All-BIG EAST teams (Nov. 11). Adler, Towler, Fabio Machado, Steeves and sophomore Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) were all named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, while freshman Daniel Neustadter (Mainz, Germany) was named to the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team. At the conclusion of the tournament, four Friars were named to the All-Tournament team, including Broome, Adler, Naglestad and sophomore Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany). In addition, Adler was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player, while Naglestad was named Most Outstanding Offensive player of the Tournament.
The Friars season wasn't over there. After receiving a first round bye in the 2014 NCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Championship Tournament for the first time in program history, the Friars went on to defeat Dartmouth (3-0) in a second round home-match on Nov. 16 to advance to the NCAA Championship Third Round for the first time in program history.
On Nov. 30, in front of a large home crowd, Providence continued its winning ways with a 1-0 win over UC Irvine, advancing to the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals.
The Friars then headed to Michigan State for a quarterfinal match-up against the third-seeded Spartans. After 90 minutes of play, Providence came away with another win (3-2), earning their first ever trip to the NCAA College Cup.
After being defeated, 3-2, in overtime against No. 2 seed UCLA, the Friars season came to an end. Upon conclusion of the 2014 College Cup, Steeves was selected as the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Tournament and he was also named to the 2014 College Cup All-Tournament Team.
Steeves became the first player in the 31 seasons that a Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the College Cup has been selected (including each of the past 18 seasons) to earn the honor while playing for a team that did not advance to the Cup final.
On Dec. 16, the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll of the season was released and Providence was ranked third, receiving one first-place vote. The ranking is the highest any team has reached in the polls.
On Dec. 10, five members of the men's soccer team were named to 2014 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I All-Regional teams. Towler was named to the All-Region First Team, Adler and Fabio Machado were named to the All-Regional Second Team, and Dominik Machado and Steeves were named to the All-Region Third Team.
On Dec. 12, the 2014 NSCAA/Continental Tire Div. I All-America Teams were announced. Among the honorees, Towler was named to the Third Team. His honor was the first time a Friar had received an All-America accolade sine Ryan Maduro `09. In the history of the program, only three other members of the men's soccer team have earned All-America honors: Ryan Maduro (2006), Seamus Purcell (1987 and 1988) and Martin Hayes (1983 and 1984).
On top of the most successful seasons in program history, on Dec. 3, Providence College Athletics announced that Karl Anderson '88 and his wife, Kerry '88, pledged $1.5 million to support the construction of a state-of-the-art soccer and lacrosse complex that will commence in May 2015.
