The Providence College men's soccer team is set to face Northeastern at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Ray Treacy Track.

Scouting the Huskies
The Huskies enter this weekend's game with a 2-4-0 record on the season. Northeastern's two wins came against UNH (8/29) and UMass Lowell (9/13). Last time out, Northeastern lost, 2-1, to Boston University on Sept. 16. Simon Cox scored the Huskies goal. In net for five of the six Northeastern games, Jonathon Thurresson has registered 15 saves and one shutout for a 2-3-0 record.
Last Weekend
The Friars finished last weekend with a 1-1-0 record, moving to 4-2-0 overall. The Friars recorded a 3-2 overtime win at Brown on Sept. 12 but then suffered a 2-1 overtime loss when they played host to Clemson on Sept. 14. Red-shirt senior Markus Naglestad, senior Fabio Machado, sophomore Mac Steeves and freshman Daniel Neustädter all registered goals for the Friars over the weekend.
Overtime With Craig Stewart
Over the last three years, under head coach Craig Stewart, the Friars have headed into overtime a total of 14 times combining for an overtime record of 5-3-6. Two of those overtime games occurred in conference and NCAA Tournament play.
The Friars Dominate The Ocean State
After Providence's win against Brown on Sept. 12, the Friars are now 3-0-0 versus their fellow Div. I in-state rivals. The first win came against Bryant, 2-0, on Aug. 29, followed by Rhode Island (5-1) on Aug. 31 and then a 3-2 OT win against Brown last weekend.
Daniel Neustädter Named BIG EAST Rookie Of The Week
Freshman Daniel Neustädter has been making his presence known on the field for the Friars and was recognized for it on Sept. 15 when he was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. The honor came after he scored the game-winning goal in Providence's 2-1 overtime win against Brown on Sept. 12. The goal marked Neustädter's first collegiate goal.
Amongst NCAA's Best
Both red-shirt senior Markus Naglestad and Fabio Machado are currently ranked in the top-10 in the nation for their performances so far this season. Naglestad ranks sixth in total goals (5) and ninth in total points (11). Machado ranks sixth for total assists (4) on the season. As far as team rankings go, the Friars are ranked sixth in the nation for total goals (14) and ninth in the nation for total points (38).
Top of the BIG EAST
The Providence College men's soccer team is ranked first in the BIG EAST for total goals and points so far this season. The Friars have collected a total of 38 points from 14 goals and 10 assists. Markus Naglestad and Fabio Machado also are conference leaders. Machado leads the BIG EAST in assists (4), while Naglestad leads the conference in goals (5) and points (11).
The Mac Attack
Sophomore Mac Steeves has scored a goal in four of the six games played thus far. After the Friars game against Holy Cross, Steeves had registered a goal in three consecutive games. Dating back to last season, Steeves has scored seven goals in the last 14 games.
Jeff Kilday Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
It was announced on Sept. 8 by the BIG EAST Conference that red-shirt junior Jeff Kilday was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Kilday earned the honor after scoring his first collegiate goal, ensuring the Friars 2-0 win against Holy Cross on Sept. 5.
Broome Posts Ninth Career Shutout
With a 2-0 win over Holy Cross on Sept. 5, Friar goalkeeper Keasel Broome recorded his second shutout of the season. The game also marked his ninth career shutout in a total of 38 games. His first shutout of the season came in a 2-0 season opener win against Bryant on Aug. 29.
Naglestad Sets NCAA Record
Red-shirt senior Markus Naglestad helped secure a victory over in-state rival Rhode Island on Aug. 30 after he scored four of the five Friar goals. Three of the four goals came within two minutes of each other (75:11, 76:07 and 77:11), breaking the NCAA Division I men's soccer record for the fastest three consecutive goals by the same player. The record was set on Oct. 20, 1985 by John Stone of SIU Edwardsville after he scored three goals within 2:15 of each other. For his efforts, Naglestad was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 1).
Friars Undefeated In Opening Weekend
In their first weekend of play for the 2014 season, the Friars came away with two wins. Providence first won at Bryant, 2-0, on Aug. 29. They then completed the weekend with a home opening victory against in-state rival Rhode Island, 5-1. Providence's five goals were the most scored under third-year Head Coach Craig Stewart and the win marked the fourth straight by the Friars over the Rams, dating back to 2010.
Last Season
Last season, the Friars advanced to the final of the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2010 and third time in program history. Providence faced Marquette in the championship game, falling 3-2. The Friars also earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history. The team advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating Penn, 3-1, in penalty kicks in the opening round. The second round game saw Providence drop a 3-1 decision to Maryland.
Gressel Named To Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
The BIG EAST Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll and Preseason All-BIG EAST Team were released on Aug. 19. Sophomore Julian Gressel was among 15 players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Providence was also selected to finish fifth out of the 10 teams in the league.
Captains Named
Head Coach Craig Stewart announced on May 5 that red-shirt senior Keasel Broome and seniors Brandon Adler and Phil Towler have been named team captains for the 2014 season.
Newcomers
Five players have joined the Friars for the 2014 season. The group of incoming players includes Lukas Ritzer, James Townsend, Daniel Neustädter, Colin Miller and Thomas Dieffenthaller.
Looking Ahead For The Friars
After Northeastern, Providence will begin BIG EAST conference play with a road game against No. 17 Marquette at 8:00 p.m. on Sept. 27.
