Softball Edged By Butler, 4-3

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Providence College softball team was edged in its series finale at Butler,4-3, on Sunday afternoon. The Friars scored one run in the top of the seventh but were unable to score again to tie the game, leaving two runners stranded.

Providence (3-19, 1-7) scored quickly in the game, when sophomore Kiki Baldassari (Deneville, N.J.) singled in the top of the first, advanced to second on a fielding error, stole third base and scored on a throwing error, giving the Friars an early 1-0 advantage.

Butler (14-21, 4-4) evened the game (1-1) in the bottom of the fourth, off of a throwing error after a stolen base. The Bulldogs gained a 2-1 lead in the following inning with one run on two hits.

The Friars got back on the board in the sixth when sophomore Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) singled to left field and drove in senior Kaitlyn Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to tie the score at two. Butler retaliated in the bottom of the inning with two runs on three hits to regain the lead, 4-2.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, PC battled for a run to pull within one (4-3) of Butler. Junior Megan Rollings (Marysville, Wash.) singled to drive in junior Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.). The Friars had two runners on base with two outs but were unable to connect on a base hit to score the tying run.

Freshman Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched in the loss and Kristin Gutierrez picked up the win for Butler.

The Friars next travel to nearby Storrs, Conn. to take on Connecticut on Wednesday, April 9, with the first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
