PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's soccer team heads to West Long Branch, N.J. on Monday, August 27 to face non-conference foe Monmouth at 7:00 p.m. The Friars enter the match with a 0-1 record, while Monmouth stands at 1-0 on the season.
Providence is looking to bounce back from a disappointing, double-overtime, loss to Northeastern in its season opener on August 24. The Friars led the match, 1-0, as senior Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) rifled a shot into the back of the net off a feed from senior Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.). Northeastern managed to tie the game, 1-1, with 4:29 remaining in regulation and forced overtime. The Huskies came away with a 2-1 victory with 31-seconds remaining in the second overtime as Laurence Braude connected off a shot from the left side that found the upper left corner of the net.
The Friars are coming off of a successful 2011 campaign, having finished the year with an 11-8-1 overall record. The team advanced to NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive season and fifth time in the last seven seasons. Providence returns four of its top five scorers from a year ago, including the team's leading scorer sophomore Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I.). In 2011, Ugarte tallied 15 points on six goals and three assists and earned BIG EAST All-Rookie Team honors. The squad also returns All-BIG EAST Third Team and NSCAA All-Northeast Region First-Team selection Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.), who recorded 11 points last season on three goals and five assists. Cintron was recently called up to play for the Puerto Rican National Team. On August 15, Cintron scored Puerto Rico's only goal in a 2-1 loss to defending World Cup and European Champion, Spain. It marked Cintron's international debut with the National Team. Junior Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) and senior Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) round out the top returning scoring threats for the Friars. Arboleda and Jecewiz each tallied six points on three goals last season.
