PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The Providence College softball team (13-20, 4-3 BIG EAST) fell in two games to the Pittsburgh Panthers (19-17, 2-6 BIG EAST)
In game one, Pittsburgh opened up a 2-0 lead in the second inning following an RBI double and a throwing error on a steal attempt. The Friars cut the lead in half in the fifth inning after senior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) scored following an infield single by classmate Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) but could not pull any closer. Senior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) gave up only one earned run and struck out five over seven innings.
In the second game, the Friars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after a sacrifice fly by freshman Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) brought home Huber and a double by junior Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) brought home the other two runs. Pittsburgh got one run back the following inning on a solo home run, and another in the top of the fourth on an RBI double. In the top of the sixth the Panthers took the lead 4-3 on a single which brought in the tying and go-ahead run. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) scored from first on a base hit by Abrams that rolled by the Panther centerfielder. The Panthers score the final run of the game in the top of the eighth to hold on for the 5-4 victory.
The Friars will complete the series with the Panthers on Saturday, April 7 at 12:00 p.m.
