Field Hockey Announces Class Of 2016

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College head field hockey coach Diane Madl announced that six student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in the fall of 2012. The Class of 2016 includes: Jackie Fusco (North Caldwell, N.J.), Emma Mackie (Delta, British Columbia, Canada), Emily Matthews (Marshfield, Mass.), Sam Mueller (Chester Springs, Pa.), Cheyenne Rodriguez (Hummelstown, Pa.) and Salene Shaffer (Millerstown, Pa.).

Fusco, a defender, currently attends West Essex Regional High School. In addition to playing field hockey, she also is a three-year letter winner on the lacrosse team. For field hockey, Fusco is a four-year member of the starting line-up and is a two-time recipient of the Best Defensive Player Award (2010, 2011). She has earned numerous honors during her four-year career, but capped it with her addition to the 2011 NFHCA Third Team National All-America Team as a senior. In 2011, she also was named NFHCA Regional All-American, Second-Team All-State, First-Team All-State (Group 2), First-Team All-North Jersey, Essex County Player of the Year, First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-County. She helped her team win the State Championship crown in 2008 and 2011. In 2011, West Essex was a finalist in the Tournament of Champions and was ranked No. 2 in the State of New Jersey. Fusco also helped produce four conference titles (2008-11) and three county championships (2008, 2009, 2011). She is the daughter of Joe and Maggie Fusco and plans to major in elementary and special education at Providence College.

Mackie, a midfielder, is the second player to join the Friars by way of British Columbia (Emily Ewens '07) and third international player overall under the direction of Madl. Mackie currently attends South Delta Secondary School and also has played four years of soccer and one year of basketball. She is a member of the Women's Canadian Junior National Team (2010-present). She also has competed for the Delta Falcons Club (2003-12), Polar Bears Travel Team (2010-11) and the British Columbia Provincial Team (2008-12). Mackie also served as team captain for the U14 and U16 Team (British Columbia) as well as her high school field hockey and soccer teams. She was named a Tournament All-Star for U16 and U18 Team BC. She also helped guide Delta Secondary School to second place in the province (2009). In 2010, Mackie was part of the Canadian National Championship team. She is the daughter of Jim and Wendy Mackie and is currently undecided on a major.

Matthews, a midfield/defender, attended Marshfield High School (2008-10) and is currently enrolled at Thayer Academy. She has amassed a total of 12 varsity letters in field hockey, ice hockey, track & field and lacrosse. Matthews helped guide her team to the ISL Championship and New England Private School Class B Championship in 2010 and 2011. She also was a part of the Bay State Games Championship team in 2010. Matthews was named an Atlantic League All-Star for field hockey and ice hockey in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, she was named All-ISL Honorable Mention. In addition to her success on the field hockey pitch, she claimed the 2011 ISL 300-meter hurdles title in track and was a member of the ISL Championship 4x400 relay team, which also set a school record. She is the daughter of Sheila and Steve Matthews and is currently undecided on a major.

Mueller, a forward/midfielder, currently attends Villa Maria Academy, where she has competed on the field hockey team all four years and was named team captain as a senior. She recorded 94 points during her career on 35 goals and 24 assists. As a senior, Mueller was second on the team in scoring with 18 goals and 12 assists. For her performance in 2011, she was named Second-Team All-State, First-Team All-Chester County, Second-Team All-Main Line and Catholic Academy League All-Star. In 2011, Villa Maria was named Southeastern Pennsylvania Team of the Year, capping off four-straight PIAA District 1 Championships (2008-11). Villa Maria also finished PIAA State Runner Up (2011), PIAA State Quarterfinalists (2008, 2010) and PIAA State Semifinalists (2009). Mueller's squad also was Catholic Academy League Co-Champions in 2011 and earned the title outright in 2008. She is the daughter of Paul and Danine Mueller and expects to major in psychology or English at Providence. Her mother, Danine, played field hockey at Villanova (1981-84).

Rodriguez, a forward, currently attends Hershey High School, where she was a three-year starter in field hockey and team captain as a senior. She also played soccer and lacrosse during her scholastic career. Rodriguez tallied 52 goals for Hershey from 2009-11 and led the team in goals and assists each year. She was named First-Team All-State, Second-Team Big 11 and First-Team Mid Penn in 2011, while also receiving the Coaches' Award. In 2010, she was named First-Team Mid Penn and Honorable Mention Big 11. As a sophomore in 2009, she was a Mid Penn Honorable Mention selection. Rodriguez helped guide Hershey to the District Championship in 2010 and were State finalists in 2008 and 2009. She is the daughter of Kelley and John Rodriguez, and expects to major in elementary / special education.

Shaffer, a midfielder, currently attends Greenwood High School, where she is a three-sport athlete in field hockey, basketball and softball. For field hockey, she recorded 110 career points on 37 goals and 36 assists. As a senior in 2011, she was named First-Team All-State, Tri-Valley First-Team All-Star, Big 11 Second Team and Team MVP. She also was named the most valuable player and all-star at the Palmyra Tournament-Cougar Classic. Shaffer helped guide her team to four-straight Tri-Valley League Championships and Perry County Tournament Championships. In 2011, her squad was the District 3 Runner Up and they advanced to the Elite 8 of the State Tournament. During her career, Greenwood posted an overall record of 75-12-2. She is the daughter of Todd and Allyson Shaffer and is currently undecided on a major.

The Friars will open their 2012 schedule at the University of Maine on Tuesday, August 28. Providence is scheduled to host its home opener on Friday, August 31 against Boston University.
