Softball Splits Home-opening Doubleheader Vs. Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Fairfield Saturday afternoon in the home opener at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. Fairfield rallied for a 5-3 win in game one, but the Friars posted a 4-2 victory in game two.

In game one, Providence took a 1-0 first inning lead on an RBI double by junior Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.). Fairfield evened the game at 1-1 in the second inning on a bases loaded walk by Brianna Levick. Freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) gave the Friars a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning with a two-run home run. It marked Dederick's first career home run. Alli Wigand homered in the sixth inning to bring the Stags to within 3-2. In the seventh inning, the Stags scored three times to take a 5-3 lead. Fairfield totaled three hits in the inning, including Rae Ball's two-run single which broke a 3-3 tie.

In game two, the Stags took a 1-0 first inning lead on an RBI single by Wigand. In the second inning, the Friars loaded the bases with three consecutive walks, before Dederick singled to drive in Kiesel and tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) and senior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) also drove in a run in the inning as the Friars led, 3-1.

Fairfield pulled to within 3-2 in the third inning on an RBI single by Tiffany Lawson, but PC regained its two-run edge (4-2) on an RBI double by Dederick. Junior Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched a complete game and struck out a season-high nine batters to earn her third win of the season.

The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, March 28 when they host St. John's in the BIG EAST opener at Raymond Field in Providence. The first game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
