PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (9-18, 1-1 BIG EAST) split a doubleheader against St. John's (12-20, 1-1 BIG EAST) in the BIG EAST Conference opener Wednesday afternoon at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. After a near two-hour rain delay, the Friars defeated the Red Storm, 4-3, in the first game. St. John's then posted a 4-1 triumph in the second game, which was called off after six innings because of darkness.
In game one, the Friars gave up the first run of the game in the top half of the first inning but tied the score in the bottom half of the inning after junior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) collected an RBI single. In the bottom of the fourth, the Friars grabbed a 3-1 lead when freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) hit a two-run home run, her second of the season, over the left-center field wall. In the fifth inning, the Friars extended their lead to 4-1 after senior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) knocked in freshman Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) with an RBI single. The Friars gave up two in the top of the seventh but held on for the 4-3 victory. Senior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) picked up her fifth win of the season, striking out two and giving up seven hits, while junior Corinne Clauss(Davie, Fla.) collected her first save of the season.
In game two, the Red Storm scored twice in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. Kristi Cady capped off the second inning with an RBI double. In the bottom half of the inning, Dederick struck again as she belted her second home run of the afternoon and her third of the season to bring the Friars to within, 4-1. Fran Carrullo earned the win in the pitcher's circle as she allowed one earned run and struck out four batters in six innings of action to lead St. John's.
The Friars will travel to Villanova for a three-game series over the weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31.
