Men's Soccer Faces Holy Cross Wednesday At Home

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team, ranked No. 23 in this week's College Soccer News national poll, will host Holy Cross on Wednesday, September 14 at 3:00 p.m. at Glay Field.

Providence (4-1) defeated Sacred Heart, 1-0, on Saturday, September 10 and recorded its fourth consecutive victory. Red-shirt sophomore Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.), who was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on September 12, scored on a header in the 60th minute as freshman Thomas Ballenthin (Lexington, Mass.) assisted on the goal. Senior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made two saves to earn his third consecutive shutout. Obando was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Arboleda leads the team in scoring with three goals (all match winners) and six points, while sophomore Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.), seniors Giuseppe Guerriero (Essex, Mass.) and John Raley (St. Inigoes, Md.) have one goal each for two points. Freshman Jimmy Petruccelli (Brentwood, N.H.) has a team best two assists. Obando has a 0.60 goals against average and has not conceded a goal in 339:01.

Holy Cross (0-3-2) is coming off a 2-2 double overtime draw against George Mason on Sunday, September 11 at the Dunkin' Donuts Brown Soccer Classic in Providence. The Crusaders trailed 1-0 early on, but scored a goal is each and took a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute. Monty Sanders and Tommy Uttaro each scored for the Crusaders. However, the Patriots evened the match in the 80th minute and forced overtime. In goal, Michael Thompson made a season-high 10 saves, including three in overtime.

Josh Cintas leads the team in scoring with three points on one goal and one assist, while Sanders and Uttaro have one goal each for two points. Thomspon has played in all five matches and has one shutout.

Providence is 18-8-4 all-time against Holy Cross, including a 3-0-1 record in the last four matches. In their most recent meeting in 2009, the Friars earned a 1-0 win at Glay Field.
