Former Providence Soccer Goalkeeper Chris Konopka Makes MLS Debut

Former Providence College men's soccer goalkeeper Chris Konopka `07 made his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, August 13 in front of a sellout crowd (25,171) at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. Konopka played the entire 90 minutes and made three saves, including a point-blank stop in the 71st minute to help the Red Bulls to a 2-2 tie against the Chicago Fire.

Prior to signing with the Red Bulls in April, Konopka played professionally for three seasons in Ireland. Konopka, who was selected in the third round (29th overall) by Kansas City in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft, played in 49 games during his four-year career at Providence College. He totalled 12 career shutouts, a 1.17 goals against average and a .777 save percentage. In addition, he set a school mark with 2020:38 minutes played in goal during the 2005 season. He also helped the Friars to two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
