VILLANOVA, PA. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams continued a trend of success against their top rivals, turning in several strong efforts at the BIG EAST Championships at the Jumbo Elliott Track.

The men's competition was highlighted by the 1500-meters, with juniors Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) and David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) placing third and fourth, respectively. Matthews registered a 3:46.98, just six tenths of a second behind the winner, Notre Dame's Jeremy Rae (3:46.38). With McCarthy posting a 3:47.59, both Friars qualified for the IC4A Championships later this week.

Also in the 1500 freshman Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) made his mark on the conference stage, joining his teammates in the finals and earning 11th place with a 3:56.24.

McCarthy had grabbed first place in Saturday's 1500 preliminaries.

Another Friar freshman impacted the 5000-meters. Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, England) placed 11th with a posting of 14:39.72. Junior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England), running in just his second track event of the school year, crossed in 13th with a 14:41.35.

McCarthy, Matthews, and Wallace joined sophomore Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, New York) for a solid outing in the 4x800. The quartet checked in with a seventh-place time of 3:37:61, also good enough to qualify for the IC4A's.

The men's program also featured a trailblazer in the throwing events, as freshman Patrick Bowler (Westwood, Mass.) earned 12th in the javelin with a heave of 53.28-meters.

On the women's side, it was the 4 x 800 team of freshmen Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), Laura Isabelle (Troy, N.Y.) and junior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) that led the way with a sixth-place time of 9:06.97, good enough to qualify for the ECAC Championships.

Davidson continued her strong track campaign with a seventh-place effort in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:35.90 also earned a spot in next week's ECAC's.

Nagel earned a spot in the 1500-meter finals and then placed 12th in an ECAC-worthy 4:29.86. Classmate Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) made her conference-meet debut with a 5000-meter time of 17:27.35. In the 10,000, junior Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.) clocked in at 36:51.06 to qualify for the ECAC's, crossing just ahead of senior Emma Perron (West Hartford, N.Y.; 37:41.38).

As with the men, the Friar women were represented in the field events. Sophomore Christina Lavigne continued her strong spring in the triple jump with a leap of 10.75-meters.

For the team results, the men placed 13th. The PC women were 15th.

The ECAC/IC4A Championships will be held May 13-15 in Princeton, N.J.
