Softball Defeats Rutgers, 14-11

Providence, R.I. - Providence College Softball (18-25, 4-10 BIG EAST) defeated Rutgers (18-22, 6-6) on Sunday, April 17, at Raymond Field to complete a three-game series. The Friars notched four home runs and were led by sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) who tallied two and drove in six runs. Freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) added four RBI's and junior Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I) chipped in with three.

The Scarlet Knights took a 1-0 lead when Brittney Lindley hit a solo home run to left field, her 10th of the season.

Providence responded in bottom half of the inning with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) and senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) recorded back-to-back singles up the middle and Rubright belted a three-run homer over the center-field wall. Rubright now has four home runs on the season.

Rutgers regained the lead in the top of the third inning. Mandy Craig hit a two-run home run that scored Loren Williams who had singled to right field. Ashley Bragg then drove in two runs on a single through the right side to give the Scarlet Knights a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Providence took a 6-5 lead on three runs, four hits and a Rutgers error. Bryant notched a two-run homer that scored Rubright who had reached on a single to center field. Later in the inning, sophomore Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) reached on a single to right field. Freshman Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) pinch ran for Kiesel and managed to come around and score on an error.

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Rutgers managed to score five runs on six hits to take a 10-6 lead. The two-out surge was ignited by back-to-back RBI doubles by Craig and Lindley. Providence responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to tie up the game, 10-10. Rubright singled to center field to bring home Huber who had led of the inning with a double to center field. Pelland then recorded a three-run home run to left field, her third of the year.

The Friars took a 14-10 lead in the fifth inning when Bryant belted a grand-slam home run, her second long ball of the day and team-leading 11th of the season.

Rutgers managed to score a run in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as Providence went on to win the game, 14-11.

Junior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned her team-best 10th win after pitching over three innings and allowing only one earned run on two hits.

The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, April 19, when they host a doubleheader against Rhode Island at Raymond Field. Game one is scheduled for Noon and the games will be televised by Cox Sports via tape delay on Wednesday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 23 at Noon.
