Providence, R.I. - The Providence College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader versus Rhode Island, 3-0, 13-2, on Tuesday, April 19. The doubleheader versus Rhode Island marked the Second Annual Pink Out Game. The event, which is sponsored by Providence College and the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation, was established to promote awareness for breast cancer.

In game one, Providence took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) hit a solo home run, her fourth of the season. The Friars extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning. Sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to left-center field and junior Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I.) reached on an error. Senior Ava Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) then doubled to left center and brought in both runners. Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) earned the win to improve to 8-11 on the season. Clauss pitched seven shutout innings, gave up only two hits and struck out eight.

In the second game of the day, the Friars wasted no time taking the lead. Junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) belted the first pitch of the game over the left-field wall to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Providence extended its lead to 4-0. Pandiani and Pelland notched back-to-back RBI singles and junior Megan McCann (Hopkinton, Mass.) registered an RBI when she drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Providence took an 11-0 lead after scoring seven runs in the second inning. Freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) started the offensive surge with a solo homer to left-center field, her fifth of the season. Freshman Morgan Culver (Seaford, Del.) pinch hit with the bases loaded and belted a grand slam over the center-field wall. Huber recorded an RBI of her own when she hit a double to left center and drove in Abrams who had singled to left field.

Freshman Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) extended the Friars' lead to 13-0 in the third inning with an RBI double that scored Pandiani and Rubright.

In the top of the fifth inning, Shelby Marquis got the Rams on the board with a two-run homer to left field. It wouldn't be enough as the Friars went on to win, 13-2.

Junior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the win after pitching a no hitter going into the fifth inning. Grosso is now 11-14 on the season after giving up only two runs on three hits.
