Softball Drops Doubleheader To Rutgers, 8-1, 10-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team dropped a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader versus Rutgers, 8-1, 10-1, Saturday afternoon.

In game one, Rutgers (18-21, 6-5 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning behind Mikelyn Messina's seventh home run of the season. The Scarlet Knights extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning when Mandy Craig hit an RBI single and Brittney Lindley notched an RBI double.

Rutgers scored five runs on four hits and two errors in the fifth inning to take an 8-0 lead. Mikelyln Messina, Lindsey Curran and Messina registered RBIs.

Providence (17-25, 3-10 BIG EAST) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Morgan Culver (Seaford, Del.) hit a single to center field. Sophomore Alaina Thomas (San Jose, Calif.) pinch ran for Culver and stole second. Thomas then advanced to third on error and scored on a single through the left side by junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.). The Scarlet Knights wouldn't give up another run and went on to win the game, 8-1.

In game two, Rutgers took a 1-0 lead when Brittney Lindley scored on an RBI single to center field by Kaci Madden.

Providence responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of its own to tie the score at 1-1. Senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) hit a double to right field and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.).

The Scarlet Knights then scored nine unanswered runs and went on to win the game, 10-1.

The two teams will complete the three-game set on Sunday, April 17, at noon.
