Providence, R.I. - Providence College softball split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader versus DePaul, 0-3 and 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field.
In game one, DePaul (16-8, 1-1 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early, 2-0, lead in the first inning and extended it by another run in the third. Kirsten Verdun notched a solo homer, her seventh of the season, and pitched seven shutout innings for the Blue Demons to improve to 9-2.
Providence (11-16, 1-1 BIG EAST) sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched well, giving up only three earned runs on one hit. Senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.), junior Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I.), junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Morgan Culver (Seaford, Del.) each notched a single in the game.
In the second game of the day, DePaul's lead-off hitter notched a solo homer on the second pitch of the game. Following the home run, Providence junior pitcher Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) settled down and didn't allow another run on the afternoon.
The Friar offense came to life in the sixth inning that was ignited by pinch hitter, sophomore Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) who singled to left field. Abrams then singled to advance the runner to third. The next batter, junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.), notched a single to score the runner on third. Stratton then stepped up to the plate and belted a three-run homer over the center field wall to give the Friars a 4-1 lead.
The two teams will complete the three-game series with a single game on Sunday, March 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Raymond Field.
