Softball Falls to DePaul, 6-3

Providence, R.I. - Providence College softball fell to DePaul, 6-3, on Sunday, March 27, at Raymond Field as the two teams wrapped up its BIG EAST Conference season-opening series. With the lose, the Friars fell to 11-16 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST. With the victory, the Blue Demons improved to 17-8 overall and 2-1 in the league.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Friars struck first. Sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Mackenzie Morgan (Sulphur Springs, Texas) advanced Bryant to third base after notching a infield single. The next batter, sophomore Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.), hit a ball into shallow right field that was dropped by the second baseman. Bryant was able to score on the play to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.

DePaul tied up the game in the fourth inning when Brittney Yniguez singled to center field to score Lynsey Ciezki who had advanced to third on a throwing error. The run was unearned, but tied the game at 1-1. In the fifth, the Blue Demons took the lead when Kirsten Verdun notched her team-leading sixth homer of the season.

Freshman Morgan Culver (Seaford, Del.) cut the DePaul lead to 4-2 when she belted a solo homer to left field, her second on the year. The next inning, the Friars cut the lead to one run after junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) notched another solo shot, her third of the season.

In the top of the seventh, DePaul added two more runs and went on to with the game, 6-3. Lindsey Dean earned the victory for the Blue Demons and improved to 3-4 on the season. For Providence, junior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) pitched over three innings, but fell to 7-9 on the season. Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) started the game for the Friars and pitched over three innings and gave up only one unearned run on six hits in the no decision

Providence is back in action on Tuesday, March 29, when its on the road to take on Fairfield at 3:00 p.m.
