Providence, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Brown University, 10-2, 10-3, in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 24. With the victories, the Friars improve to 10-15 and the Brown Bears fall to 5-8-1.

In game one, the Friars jumped out to an early, 4-0, lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) registered a grand-slam home run, her first of three long balls on the day. Junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) extended the lead to 5-0 in the next inning when she belted a homer, her second of the season.

Brown managed to get on the board in the third behind Stephanie Thompson's solo shot to left-center field. The Friars answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) singled to center field to bring in junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.). Two batters later, freshman Morgan Culver (Seaford, Del.) belted a shot to center field to give the Friars an 8-1 lead.

After Brown narrowed the lead to 8-2, Providence scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyhoga Falls, Ohio) notched her second homer of the season, which scored two. Junior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the win after pitching five innings and giving up only two earned runs on six hits.

In the second game of the day, the Friars fell behind, 3-2, entering the fourth inning until they exploded for four runs. Stratton registered a two-run double to right-center field. The next batter was Bryant who notched a homer to right field.

The Friars added two more runs in the fifth and the sixth inning each to expand the lead to 10-3. Sophomore Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) notched her first-career home run and Bryant notched her eighth of the season. Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) earned the victory after pitching seven innings and allowing only two earned runs.

Bryant led the offensive surge for the Friars, tallying three home runs and eight RBIs. As a team, Providence notched 23 hits on the day.

The Friars open up BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday, March 26, when they host DePaul in a doubleheader at noon at PC's Glay Field.
