Track and Field Finishes Strong at BIG EAST Championships

AKRON, OHIO - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams concluded their competition in the BIG EAST Championships Sunday, claiming five more top five finishes in the process.

All told, the Friar programs are leaving Akron with seven top-five efforts, the most since black-and-white clad harrier claimed seven in 2007.

On the women's side, junior Hannah Davidson earned second place in the 3000-meters, crossing the tape in 9:22.88. The clocking was just 1.79 seconds shy of the winner, West Virginia's Jessica O'Connell (9:21.09). Davidson has qualified for the ECAC Championships to be held next month.

In the same event, junior Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) continued her strong indoors with a ninth-place time of 9:29.58, also good for ECAC qualification.

On the men's side, the distance medley relay team of freshman Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.), Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) grabbed second in 9:49.71, less than half a second behind the winners from Georgetown (9:49.29).

Junior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) earned fourth-place in the mile finals, crossing the tape in 4:10.26. It is a jump of five spots from his ninth-place finish at last year's conference meet.

Also Sunday, Channon captured fourth place in the 3000, posting a time of 8:21.14. It is the second time he has claimed fourth-place at the conference championship.

And The men's 4 X 800 meter relay team of Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.), David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland), Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) and Matthews grabbed fourth place with a showing of 7:34.07.

It was McCarthy and sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) who started the top-five trend yesterday, each garnering second in their respective 5000-meter runs.

Also Sunday, Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) was ninth in his first BIG EAST finals, completing the 1000-meters in2:30.23.

The women's distance medley relay quartet of Ffrench O'Carroll, Julie Wolf (Holden, Mass.), Laura Isabelle (Troy, N.Y.) and Davidson were sixth (11:46.94).

The men's 4 X 400 of Stannard, Rebovich, Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.) and Thomas Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.) was eighth (3:19.04). The women's Friars 4 X 400 - meter relay team of Julie Wolf, Meg Van Name (Stamford, Conn.), Molly Shapiro (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.) placed 14th with a showing of 3:58.35.

For the team results, the Friar men placed 10 out of 12 with 32 points. The women were 12th out of 14 teams with 19 points.

Up next for both programs is the New England Championships, to be held next Friday and Saturday at Boston University.
