Providence College men's soccer seniors Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) and Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) were selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft on Tuesday, January 18. Marcin was drafted 41st overall by the Philadelphia Union, while Sousa was taken 42nd by the New England Revolution. They become the second and third Providence players ever drafted by MLS teams.
In 2010, Marcin finished as the team's leading scorer with career highs in goals (10), assists (4) and points (24). The 10 goals were the most by a Friar since 1991. In addition, four of Marcin's 10 goals were match winners. He was named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Region First Team, the All-BIG EAST First Team and earned BIG EAST All-Tournament Team honors. His 22 career goals are tied for fifth all-time at Providence, while the 53 points ranks seventh.
Sousa played in 18 games last season and finished with a career-high four goals, two of which were game winners. He scored the eventual match winner in a 2-1 triumph over Cincinnati in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals. For his efforts, he was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. In all, Sousa played in 51 games at Providence and totaled eight goals and seven assist for 23 points.
Marcin and Sousa helped lead the Friars to one of their most successful seasons in program history. Providence finished with a 13-6-3 overall record, one win shy of tying a school record for most victories. The Friars also advanced to the BIG EAST Championship final where they tied No. 1 Louisville, 1-1, in double overtime, but fell in a penalty kick shootout. Providence then earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and hosted its first ever NCAA Championship Tournament match. The Friars defeated Saint Peter's, 6-2, on November 18 to advance to the second round for the second time ever. On their way to the NCAAs, the Friars had a 10-game unbeaten streak (8-0-2), including seven consecutive wins.
Marcin and Sousa join three other former Friars who have been part of the MLS. Former Friar Timothy Murray was signed by the Revolution in 2010 after a three-month trial. Current Providence Head Coach, Chaka Daley, was called up from the A-League and played for the Revolution in 1999. Chris Konopka was the first Friar selected by an MLS Team as he was taken by the Kansas City Wizards in the 2007 Supplemental Draft.
